Golf Ontario – The Investors Group Ontario Senior Men’s Amateur Championship is taking place this week at the immaculate Dalewood Golf Club in Cobourg. Round one got underway this morning with split tees at 7:30 under wet but warm conditions from overnight rain. The club staff have worked extremely hard preparing for the Championship and despite the rain, the course is in great condition.

The leaderboard after the first one is a tight one after some terrific golf all around. Kerry Short of St. Catherines Golf & Country Club and Nick Rizzo of Brantford Golf & Country Club share the lead with a -1 (70) after the morning groups had finished and that’s where it remained after all the afternoon groups finished as well. Rizzo when asked about his play today said “I just played a fairly steady round”.  He added having his son caddying for him today helped. “He really helped me read the greens and I played my steady round while making some good up-and-downs and some par saves“. Another notable was Ashley Chinner, a past PGA of Canada Champion, who had an astounding five under on his front 9 but unfortunately ran into some trouble on his back nine and finished +1 overall (72). There are five golfers one shot back at even par (71). Moving day should be very exciting on Wednesday and hopefully the weather cooperates.

Home club golfer Chris Mcivor shot a strong +2 (73) while fellow Dalewood players Bob Arsenault shot a +5 (76) and Chris Markle turned in a +9 (80).

In addition to the title itself, the golfers are looking to claim one of the Canadian Men‘s Mid-Amateur Championship qualifying spots and the top three finishers will earn the right to represent Ontario in the inter-provincial competition at the Canadian Men’s Mid-Amateur Championship September 4-7 at Gowan Brae Golf Club.
