Triathlon BC – With the unfortunate cancellations of the Apple Triathlon and Super League Triathlons due to poor air quality last weekend, BC athletes lost a number of 2019 Age Group World Championship sprint and standard distance qualifying opportunities.

Triathlon BC, in partnership with Triathlon Canada and local Race Directors, are pleased to announce replacement qualifying events for the 2019 ITU Sprint and Standard Distance World Championships. Age group athletes will now have the opportunity to represent Canada by qualifying at the Vancouver Triathlon, Summerland Triathlon, and Dynamic Events’ Cultus Lake Triathlon.

“It was critical for Triathlon BC to keep as many qualifying opportunities as we could here in BC,” exclaimed Executive Director, Allan Prazsky. “Our athletes were in peak form to take on Triathlon Canada’s National Championships at the Apple Triathlon, and to test the entirely new Super League format. The draw to qualify for the 2019 World Championships was definitely a component to many of the weekend’s competitors. I’m grateful to see the qualifying opportunities stay in our province.

The International Triathlon Union (ITU) holds both Multisport World Championships, consisting of Aquabike, Aquathlon, Duathlon, Cross Triathlon and Long Distance Triathlon, and the Grand Final, hosting the World Championships in Sprint and Standard Distance Triathlon.  The 2019 Multisport Championships take place in Pontevedra, Spain, while the Grand Final will be hosted in Lausanne, Switzerland.

Athletes who go on to earn an automatic spot at a designated qualifying event must also meet Triathlon Canada’s eligibility criteria.

Note 1:  To be eligible to secure a World Championship spot, athletes must be members of their provincial triathlon association (i.e. Triathlon BC) PRIOR to competing in the qualifying event.

Note 2:  Age-groups are categorized according to gender and 5-year age brackets (i.e. 16-19, 20-24, 25-29, etc.)

Note 3:  If an event has 2 qualifying spots per age group, the top 2 athletes of each gender with a valid annual provincial membership for each age-adjusted age category are qualifiers.

Note 4: Cultus Lake will be adding additional athlete registration opportunities at 9:00am on August 27th.
