2017 Canada Summer Games – (Gimli, MB) July 15, 2017 – The Canada Games’ Roly McLenahan Torch made a grand entrance today, arriving by boat at the Gimli Harbour to kick off the eighth leg of the Manitoba Hydro Torch Relay. Residents of the picturesque town on the shores of Lake Winnipeg gathered to cheer on fifteen community volunteers and local residents who were selected as torchbearers for their community spirit and passion for sport and youth.

The torchbearers, who took turns carrying the torch through the streets of Gimli, include leaders such as Dorothy Pitt, a retired nurse, physical education teacher and Canada Games volunteer Rachelle Burak from Arborg. Gimli youth were well represented by local athletes Thea Goodman, Jocelyn Heald and Claire Signatovich. Other notable torchbearers include Canada Games alumna Kim Croy who competed for Manitoba in wheelchair basketball and managed team Canada and team Manitoba wheelchair basketball for many years.

The Manitoba Hydro Torch Relay carries the excitement of the Games throughout Manitoba. The torch was lit in Ottawa on June 6, 2017 for the official lighting ceremony. On June 21, Indigenous Elders and Grandmothers infused the Torch Relay with the spirit of the Sacred Fire, while honouring the land and waters the 2017 Canada Summer Games will be held upon.  Between June 23 and July 26, the Roly McLenahan Torch will travel to 10 communities around the province, as well as to Kenora, Ontario.

*Every effort has been made to ensure the accuracy of all information regarding the torchbearers including the correct spelling of their name. Events and participants are subject to change.  We regret any error that may have found its way into the list or any other communication material.
