Sport Law Partner Dina Bell-Laroche was recently interviewed by two-time Olympian and CBC host of Player’s Own Voice Anastasia Bucsis to talk about grief and loss in sport. Anastasia was struck by Dina’s capacity to relate to our inner experience by providing us with the language we need to make sense of our life losses. Dina and Anastasia covered a lot of ground during this podcast including understanding how bereavement theory can support more holistic approaches in sport, why she believes that athletes and coaches would benefit from greater loss literacy, and her hope for a safer and more holistic sport experience based on shared values and the principles of True Sport.

Dina has been supporting a growing number of retired athletes as they transition out of the high-performance environment and has incorporated her bereavement training in her sessions leaving athletes feeling more equipped to work through this life transition. She reminds us that just because we carry it so well, it doesn’t mean it’s not heavy.
