Gymnastics Canada  – Everett, USA (April 9, 2016) – It was an all-around effort on Saturday as Canada won six medals – one gold, three silver and two bronze – on day two of competition at the Pacific Rim Gymnastics Championships in Everett, Washington. 

Following a bronze medal performance in the trampoline team event on Friday, Samantha Smith of Richmond Hill, ON and Samantha Sendel of Aurora, ON competed in the senior trampoline finals.  Smith had the best performance of the competition and took home the gold medal with a score of 54.240.

“I was really happy with my routine, I upped the difficulty a little bit from yesterday so it was nice to do my best tonight and have all my hard work pay off,” said Smith.

Sendel also had a strong performance and secured the bronze medal with a score of 52.695. “I’m happy with my bronze medal. I’ll use this experience to help build a stronger program with more difficulty and finish the season off strong,” said Sendel.

The rhythmic gymnastics team was well represented in all events winning silver in the team event as well as a bronze in the senior all-around and silver in the junior all-around.  The team event featured junior gymnasts Alexandra Chtrevenskii of Montreal, QC, Natalie Garcia of Mississauga, ON, and Sophie Crane of Toronto, ON as well as senior gymnasts Natali Niklova of Montreal, QC, Katherine Uchida of Toronto, ON, and Cindy Huh of Vancouver, BC.

Uchida won bronze in the senior all-around with a score of 59.582. “I made a couple of mistakes in some of my routines, but I’m happy because I made a progression over the last couple of days and look forward to redeeming myself in the event final on Sunday,” said Uchida

Montreal’s Alexandra Chtrevenskii scored 53.898 in the junior all-around competition and won the silver medal. “I am satisfied with my results today” said Chtrevenskii. “I didn’t want to let the team down and even though there were some mistakes, I look forward to improving upon them tomorrow.”

The women’s artistic team comprised of Brittany Rogers of Calgary, AB, Shallon Olsen of Vancouver, BC, Kirsten Peterman of Cambridge, ON, Madison Copiak of Calgary, AB, Megan Roberts of Toronto, ON and Audrey Rousseau of La Prairie, QC came together as a unit and landed in second place overall with a score of 219.200 to win the silver medal.

Similar to the men’s artistic all-around competition, the top-eight finishers from each apparatus for the women’s side will qualify for the junior and senior individual event finals on Sunday. 

Senior team newcomer Shallon Olsen finished sixth in the all-around and will be one of the Canadians to advance to Sunday’s finals. “I’m happy with my contribution to the team tonight, I feel proud that I helped Canada win silver,” said Olsen. “My performances went well and I’m looking forward to competing in the finals tomorrow.”

The Pacific Rim Championships wrap-up on Sunday with both junior and senior men’s and women’s artistic gymnastics individual event finals in addition to the rhythmic gymnastics individual event finals.
