Schwaiger wins record sixth consecutive tumbling title on final day of Canadian Championships in Trampoline Gymnastics
Gymnastics Canada – OSHAWA, ON (July 16, 2017) – Jon Schwaiger of Calgary, AB – now training in Cambridge, ON, won a record sixth consecutive national title in senior men’s tumbling Sunday on the final day of the 2017 Canadian Championships in Trampoline gymnastics.
Schwaiger’s record surpasses that of his coach, Denis Vachon, who won five consecutive senior titles.
“I didn’t do exactly what I planned to do but the downgrade was nothing too severe so I’m very happy with how that went,” said Schwaiger following the event. “Now I can finally say I have more titles than Denis which is even better!”
Winning silver in men’s senior tumbling was Michael Chaves of Ontario, and bronze went to Jared Khalifa of BC.
Also winning a consecutive title was Jordan Sugrim of Mississauga, ON who won her third consecutive, and fifth all-time, senior women’s tumbling title with 130.800 points. Nora Abouraja of Quebec finished second with 123.000 points, and Catherine McNutt of Ontario took the bronze with 115.00 points.
“I’m getting much better at putting the end skills I want at the end – the middle skills I’ve been doing for a while but they don’t always get to the end skill I want. But at this competition and Canada Cup I’ve been getting double-flipping end skills and that’s been my goal,” said Sugrim, who along with Schwaiger will compete in tumbling at the World Games next week.
Sunday’s event wrapped up with team finals where three to four athletes – one from each age category – come together to represent their province in each of the apparatus being contested at these championships. Teams from BC and Quebec ended up taking home medals in five out of the 6 disciplines, including gold in women’s trampoline for BC, and gold in men’s trampoline for Quebec. Team Ontario dominated the tumbling competition taking home gold in both men’s and women’s categories. Team Alberta took gold in men’s DMT, and Team Saskatchewan took gold in women’s DMT.
“I’m happy with what I saw here this weekend,” said Stephan Duchesne, High Performance Director for Trampoline Gymnastics at Gymnastics Canada. “We’re in the middle of the year, so the senior athletes are still putting pieces together. For tumbling and double mini-trampoline – we had some very good performances in preparation for next week’s World Games so I can’t wait to see what’s going to happen there. Getting medals over there isn’t going to be easy, but we’re looking at maximizing our performance down there and we will see.”
The World Games team of Schwaiger, Sugrim, and Tamara O’Brien of Vancouver, BC will leave for Poland this upcoming Thursday and compete July 25th and 26th in Poznan, Poland. The World Games feature sports that are not contested at the Olympic Games.
These Championships, organized by Just Bounce Trampoline, were part of the selection process for the World Championships and World Age Group Competition set to take place in Sofia, Bulgaria in November. The final teams for those competitions will be announced following a third selection trial set for September.
