BC Rugby – Vancouver, BC – Sept 20, 2016: During the weekend of September 17th and 18th the Saratoga Cup was contested in Penticton BC. The Cup is contested by the best independent clubs who play in Northern BC,  Okanagan and the Interior. BC Rugby would like to thank the hosts the Pentincton Harlequins and Club President Ken Simpson for their effort in organizing the event.

Day 1:
Vernon Jackals 10 – 7 Rocky Mountain Rogues (Cranbrook)

The Rocky Mountain Rogues of Cranbrook BC came out strong in the first half but only managed to build a 7-0 lead going into the half. The Vernon Jackals kept themselves in the match through some strong defence and were able to capitalize on their opportunities in the second half to go up 10-7 and were able to hang on despite a late pressure from the Rogues.

Terrace Northmen 31 – 5 Penticton Harlequins

The Terrace Northmen qualified for their first trip to the Saratoga Cup through winning the Independent Northern 3rd Division League. The Northmen made the journey with a roster of 26 men to take on hosts Penticton Harlequins in the second match of the tournament. The Northmen came out slow perhaps a result of the travel they were able to rebound in the second half and amass a hefty lead to finish the match 31-5.

Day 2:
Rocky Mountain Rogues (Cranbrook) 36 – 33 Penticton Harlequins

In the 3/4th place match up the Penticton Harlequins struck first blood when an intercept from the number 10 took them the length of the field and were able to strike with quick ball. The two teams traded blows throughout the match with. Penticton’s scrum dominated throughout the match but it was the Cranbrook backs and big ball carriers that were able to impose their will on the game and came out on top to finish in 3rd place.

Terrace Northmen 55 vs  22 Vernon Jackals

The 2016 Saratoga Cup Championship Match was contested between the Terrace Northmen and the Vernon Jackals. The Northmen got off to a quick start scoring early tries through excellent backline play.  The Terrace back line had strong ball carriers and speed throughout and were able to play with continuity setting up some beautiful long distance tries. With an early stranglehold on the match Vernon did not give in and were able to rally with a couple of scores of their own before the end of the half. The second half mirrored the first half of the game and Terrace ended up running out winners of their first Saratoga Cup.
