Canada Soccer – Mexico coach Roberto Medina has selected a squad of 23 players for the upcoming Canada international match at BC Place in Vancouver. The squad features a mix of experience and youth, including one-time FIFA World Player of the Year candidate Mónica Ocampo and former FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup all-stars Bianca Henninger and Cecilia Santiago.

All 23 players have experience against Canada at either the national or national youth level, most recently in December 2015 at the Torneio Internacional de Natal in Brazil. While the two nations avoided each other during the 2016 CONCACAF Women’s Olympic Qualifiers, they did go head-to-head in 2012 when Canada qualified for the London 2012 Olympic Games at BC Place.

Four players from that 2012 team are still in Mexico colours for the 2017 trip to Vancouver: Ocampo, Santiago, Christina Murillo, and Teresa Noyola. Along with those four, Stephany Mayor and María Sánchez were part of the Mexico side that competed at the FIFA Women’s World Cup Canada 2015.

As for youth, the Mexico squad features 15 players who are 22 years or younger, including 10 who participated at the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup Papua New Guinea 2016.

The 4 February 2017 match will be the first international match for both Canada and Mexico. Last year, Mexico posted a record of three wins, one draw, and two losses in six international matches.

Canada Soccer’s Bronze Medal Celebration match is 4 February 2017 at BC Place.
