Manitoba Badminton Association – The MHSAA Badminton Provincials were held May 4 and 5 in Brandon. Thirty-two teams in each of five events gathered in Brandon to see who were the top varsity badminton players in the province. After two days of some very intense matches, Provincial Champions were crowned.

Fort Richmond Collegiate was crowned the AAA/AAAA School Dairy Farmers of Manitoba Championship Banner winner. This is Fort Richmond’s third year in a row winning the provincial title. The Fort Richmond Collegiate team of Anthony Duan, Michelle Lee, Sam Larson, Allan Liu, Jerry Chen, Ruihao Li, Jeannette Ding, Naomi Tran, Shajbir Ghotra and Tiffany Tantakoun amassed 60 points for a resounding first place. This was helped by Gold Medal performances by Sam Larson and Allan Liu in Boys Doubles, Jeannette Ding and Naomi Tran in Girls Doubles, and Tiffany Tantakoun in Girls Singles. This was Tantakoun’s third Gold Medal at the High School Provincials while Ding took home her second Gold. The Fort Richmond team is coached by Keith Redfern.

The A/AA School Dairy Farmers of Manitoba Championship Banner was won by Grand Rapids with 30 points. The team consisted of: Isaak Halibisky, Nithaniel Nasikapow, Charisma Ferland, Tammy Mitchell, Easton George, Avery Dick, and Ashelle Dick. This is the first provincial banner ever for Grand Rapids in any sport. Medal winners from Grand Rapids were Bronze Medal in Girls Singles for Ashelle Dick and a Bronze Medal in Boys Singles for Avery Dick. This win was bittersweet for these students as they lost their coach last fall when he passed away. The students have continued playing this year and with the help of another teacher, John Heinrich, have continued their success in the sport.

This was the second year that High School Provincials was held in Brandon and the organizing committee did a fantastic job.
