Swimming Canada – MONTREAL – Mack Darragh of Oakville, Ont., broke the national record in the men’s 200-m butterfly on Monday to conclude the 2017 Canadian Swimming Championships.

Darragh clocked one minute and 56.87 seconds to eclipse the previous Canadian mark of 1:56.90 set by Zack Chetrat of Toronto in 2015. Montana Champagne of Ottawa was second in 2:00.17 and Connor Wilkins of Oakville third at 2:02.04.

‘’It feels amazing to get the record,’’ said Darragh. ‘’Zack is an old teammate of my mine and I’ve been working so long to get that record. It’s a great way to finish the season.’’

Other winners in men’s competition were Yuri Kisil of Calgary in the 100-m freestyle, Kaelan Freund of Lethbridge, Alta., in the 100-m breaststroke and Peter Brothers of Victoria in the 800-m freestyle.

Kisil’s 48.56 clocking in the 100 free was ranked the top swim of the meet on the men’s side.

‘’I’ve been consistently around that time all summer so it was OK,’’ said Kisil. ‘’This was my last race of the season and I was hoping to go under 48 seconds.’’

In women’s competition, the winners were Alexia Zevnik of Pointe-Claire, Que., in the 100 free, Mabel Zavaros of Oakville in the 200 fly, Kelsey Wog of Winnipeg in the 100 breaststroke and Mackenzie Padington of Victoria in the 1500-m freestyle.

‘’That was a great race, the best I’ve ever had in the 1500 free,’’ said Padington, who won the race by less than half of second over Marit Anderson of Calgary in 16:38.47. ‘’Marit gave me a big challenge and I was pleased to see two of us go under 17 minutes.’’

Zevnik’s win in the 100-m backstroke on the weekend was deemed the top swim on the women’s side.

CHENA Swim Club from North Vancouver and Island Swimming from Victoria won the men’s and women’s 4X100-m medley relays.

In Para swimming, the winners included Alexander Elliot of Kitchener, Ont., in the 100 free and Katarina Roxon of Stephenville, N.L., and Maxime Rousselle of St-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Que., in the 100 breaststroke.

‘’I’ve just come off some injuries so I know the time can be better,’’ said Roxon, who is tuning up for the Para Swimming World Championships next month in Mexico. ‘’I’ll be getting into some heavy training now and I’m confident I can be ready for the worlds.’’

In the overall club standings, the Oakville Aquatic Club took the combined title followed by UBC and Island Swimming.

UBC topped the men’s standings followed by Oakville and CHENA while Island was first on the women’s side with Oakville and Pointe-Claire second and third.
