Golf Ontario – THORNHILL— Two players rose up from the field during the second round of the Investors Group Ontario Men’s Amateur Championship, July 13 from the Thornhill Club. Unionville’s Max Sear and Kitchener’s Keaton Jones both had solid rounds and now share the lead at five-under heading into the third round.

Coming into the day, Jones, a Whistle Bear Golf Club member, sat in a tie for fourth after his opening round of one-under (70). The 20-year-old was in the morning pairings during round two and set the course a blaze with a four-under (67). After an even front nine, Jones was dominant on the back nine finishing the round with birdies on the final three holes.

Jones’ finish was only to be outdone by Sear later in the day. The York Downs Golf & Country Club member came into the day in a tie for second after an opening round of two-under (69), but didn’t look too dangerous early on. He was one-over at the turn and then fell to two-over after the 12th. However, the 19-year-old went on to play the final four holes five-under, highlighted by an eagle on 17, to finish the round three-under (68).

Jones and Sear currently hold a three-stroke lead over Thornhill’s Ryan Tsang and first-round leader Mississauga’s Eric Flockhart. Tsang, from Cedar Brae Golf & Country Club, carded his second consecutive round of one-under (70), while Flockhart followed up his three-under (68) from round one with a one-over (72) during the second round. Both players are two-under for the tournament.

Rounding out the top five is a three-way tie between Bath’s Austin James, Cayuga’s Charles Corner and Toronto’s Chris Wilson. After an opening round of one-over (72), James carded a two-under (69) in round two. Corner, who began the day in a tie for second after his first round of two-under (69), finished the second round at one-over (72). Wilson followed up his opening round one-over (72) with a two-under (69). All three sit at one-under for the championship. 

In total, 155 players began the four-day, 72-hole tournament. After the round, the field was cut to the lowest 60 scores. The cut was set at 10-over (152).

In addition to playing for the Gary Cowan Trophy, players are competing for a qualifying spot at the Canadian Men’s Amateur Championship, Aug. 8-11, at The Royal Ottawa Golf Club & Eagle Creek Golf Club in Ottawa-Gatineau. The top three finishers will also earn the right to represent Ontario in the team competition at the Canadian Amateur.
