Sport  Nova Scotia – HALIFAX, NS (April 2016) – Liam Moffatt of Truro has been named Sport Chek Male Individual Athlete of the Month for his impressive results at the 2016 FIS World Junior Championships held in Rolga, Slovenia. The eighteen year-old snowboarder had a strong showing, placing 10th among 73 competitors in the snowboardcross competition.

Fourteen year-old Jade Hannah has been named Sport Check Female Individual Athlete of the Month. A member of the Halifax Trojans, the swimmer recently competed at the 2016 Canadian Olympic and Para Swimming Trials in Toronto where she set new Nova Scotia provincial records in the 13-14 100m Butterfly and the Open 100m Butterfly. Hannah is now a member of the Canadian National Junior Team and is also a member of Swim Nova Scotia’s High Performance Team.

Mason Smith has been named Sport Chek Male Team Athlete of the Month for his performance at the 2016 Canadian Goalball Championships in Quebec City. The 16 year-old Middleton native brought home a gold medal after Nova Scotia defeated British Columbia 2-0 in a thrilling championship game. Smith also competed at the Canadian Junior Goalball Championships held earlier in the month where Nova Scotia placed second.

Jill Saulnier has been awarded Sport Chek Female Team Athlete of the Month. The Halifax forward captured a silver medal at the 2016 IIHF Women’s World Hockey Championships in Kamloops, BC. Known for her self-sacrificing style of play, Saulnier was rewarded on the score sheet with one goal and two assists through tournament play.

Team Jones is named the Sport Chek Team of the Month for their accomplishments at the 2016 Everest Canadian Senior Curling Championships. Team Jones, consisting of Nancy Delahunt, Mary Sue Radford, Kim Kelly, and Colleen Jones defeated Saskatchewan 5-2 in the championship final. Team Jones will play as Team Canada at the 2017 World Senior Curling Championships which are to be held in Lethbridge, AB next year.

The Athlete of the Month program is administered by Sport Nova Scotia, whose members are eligible to nominate athletes for the awards. A membership committee selects the award recipients for five possible categories: Male Individual Athlete, Female Individual Athlete, Male Team Athlete, Female Team Athlete, and Team.
