Grande Prairie, AB – The City of Grande Prairie has been successful in its bid to host the Alberta Summer Games in July, 2018. The Games provide an opportunity for Albertans 11 – 17 years of age to compete in a province-wide summer sports competition.

“The Alberta Games are an important part of Alberta’s culture, inspiring our young amateur athletes while bringing communities together,” said Premier Rachel Notley. “Congratulations to the City of Grande Prairie and all those who worked together on the successful bid to host these Games. I am confident that the volunteers, sponsors and supporters will do an amazing job in 2018.”

More than 3,000 participants, their families and spectators are expected to attend these events and participate in wide variety of sports including: athletics, cycling, baseball, swimming, triathlon, rugby, basketball, soccer, canoe/kayak and beach volleyball. The Alberta government will provide $420,000 in support of the 2018 Alberta Summer Games through Alberta Sport Connection, which includes a cultural grant of $70,000.

“These games will be a great opportunity for Grande Prairie to showcase their community”, said John Short, Chair of ASC. “It’s a great sports city and we are look forward to working with them in staging these Games and welcoming athletes from across our province to the 2018 Alberta Summer Games.”

The Alberta Summer Games are coordinated by the Alberta Sport Connection in partnership with the host community. Participants earn the right to participate in the games by qualifying through zone playoffs throughout the province which are held for each sport.

The economic impact of the Alberta Games generates about $3 million for host communities.
