U Sports – TORONTO (U SPORTS) – Concordia quarterback Trenton Miller, Wilfrid Laurier defensive lineman Robbie Smith and Guelph kicker/punter Gabriel Ferraro are U SPORTS Football Players of the Week, for the period ending September 17, 2017.

Miller threw a school record six touchdown passes to lead the Concordia Stingers to a 68-16 victory over the McGill Redmen. Miller connected with wide receiver Sam Nadon for three TD strikes (14, 15 and 16 yards). He also found Vince Alessandrini for a five-yard major, Jarryd Taylor for a 12-yard touchdown and Yanic Lessard on a 44-yard pass-and-run score. With the six touchdowns, Miller broke a school record set in 1998 when quarterback Sean Hoas threw five TDs in a game versus the Laval Rouge et Or.

Defensive lineman Robbie Smith (Brampton, Ont.), set out a defensive showcase in the Golden Hawks’ game against the Queen’s Gaels. The fourth-year kinesiology student lead the team with 4.5 sacks over 21 yards to keep Laurier’s perfect record on the season. With his performance, Smith broke a single game sack record for Wilfrid Laurier – set by Kwaku Boetang with four in 2014. Smith is now second in the nation for number of sacks with 5.5 to his name and third in Canada in sack yards with 33 yards.

Gryphons fourth-year kicker Gabe Ferraro takes home Special Teams Player of the Week honours after setting a new, single-game career-high with five made field goals Saturday at U of T. Ferraro, who currently leads U SPORTS with 15 made field goals, finished the day 5-for-6 vs U of T, with makes of 30, 25, 39, 43 and 26. Ferraro also had a solid day punting when called upon, averaging 37.5 yards per punt while twice pinning U of T inside their own 20-yard line.

About Football Reporters of Canada

Football Reporters of Canada (FRC) represents journalists and broadcasters in every region of the country covering U SPORTS Football. Since 1958, Football Reporters of Canada has been an organization of media members who have covered the Canadian Football League, serving to select the league’s outstanding players, coach-of-the-year and all-star teams through voting conducted by its members. In 2009, the FRC amalgamated with the University Football Reporters of Canada (UFRC) to give the organization greater scope in its affiliation with amateur and university football. FRC also works with the CFL and U SPORTS to establish guidelines and working conditions for the men and women who report on the game. Selected members of FRC also help to choose builders, players and media members for induction into the Canadian Football Hall of Fame.
