Diving – SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico –  Elaena Dick of Edmonton advanced to the final on women’s 10-m tower on Thursday to open the third stop on the FINA Grand Prix diving circuit.

Dick finished second in one of two semifinal heats with 282.00 points. She was just over a point behind Ingrid Oliveira of Brazil who won the semi with 283.25.

Dick got off to a rough start in her semi landing short on her opening reverse dive. She came back strong with the highlight 70.30 points for her inward three and a half in the third round.

‘’With only six divers in the semis you couldn’t dwell too much on your mistakes,’’ said Dick, 15, who made her Grand Prix debut last month at the Canada Cup in Gatineau, Que. ‘’The inward dive was definitely the highlight because I’ve been struggling with it all year. But it turned out well and I didn’t land short or over. I was happy to get it vertical.’’

The other semifinal was won by Xin Liu of China with 335.15 while her compatriot Rui Zhang was second at 307.60. Margo Erlam of Calgary was sixth and does not advance to Saturday’s final.

On men’s three-metre, Henry McKay of Ottawa missed a berth in the final by one spot finishing fourth in his semi heat in his Grand Prix debut.

‘’I thought it went extremely well,’’ said McKay, 17. ‘’The result was way above my expectations. I had trouble in training here this week but I just told myself it’s my first Grand Prix and there really isn’t any pressure on me.’’

Bryden Hattie of Victoria was 14th in the preliminaries.

Competition continues Friday with the prelims and semis on men’s tower and women’s three-metre.
