Diving Canada – Canada’s Peter Thach Mai seventh at diving Grand Prix

BOLZANO, Italy – A vastly improved improved performance in the semifinal wasn’t enough for Montreal’s Peter Thach Mai to advance to the men’s three-metre final on Friday at the Bolzano FINA Grand Prix diving competition.

After advancing to the semis with the 12th and last qualifying spot in the preliminaries with 331.80 points, Thach Mai rebounded with a 386.80 score in his semi. Unfortunately, that placed him fourth in his semi heat. Only the top-three advance.

Thach Mai, 20, actually had the fifth best score of the day and he would have ranked second in the other semi. His final placement will be seventh.

‘’I felt I was able to pull something out of this competition in the semifinal after a tough prelims and a tough week in general with my training,’’ said Thach Mai. ‘’I was actually relieved I just made the semis because the prelims were rough.’’

Earlier this season he swept gold in the springboard events at the Winter Nationals and has competed at two other Grand Prix this season.

‘’It’s been an inconsistent season,’’ he said. ‘’But these kinds of meets are a great experience to help you learn to deal with the stress and manage your time.’’

Canada’s other two entries here are in action this weekend. They are Alexandre Corriveau of Terrebonne, Que., and Ashley McCool of Calgary.
