Skate Canada Manitoba – WINNIPEG (MANITOBA):  Come out and join in for a fun day on the ice with family and friends as we embrace what skating means to Canadians.  A FREE public skating session is taking place in our community!

On December 10, 2017, the Government of Canada and title sponsor Rogers Communications have teamed up with Skate Canada and the Skate Canada Manitoba Section to offer a unique opportunity for Canadians to unite and celebrate this timeless piece of our nation’s culture and heritage.

The Skate Canada Manitoba Section is honoured to have been selected as one of 17 national flagship hosts of Canada 150 Skating Day.  The event in Winnipeg will be held at the Dakota Community Centre from 2:15 PM – 4:45 PM.  In addition to the activities on the ice, the event will feature an exhibition by local skaters, free
give-aways, get your picture taken with Winnipeg Blue Bombers Buzz & Boomer and Goldie from the Winnipeg Goldeyes. Also, there will be access to free instruction by Skate Canada coaches.

To promote the diversity, inclusion and healthy lifestyle that skating represents, an integral piece of the Canada 150 Skating Day legacy will be the introduction of community skate banks, allowing children without equipment the opportunity to take part – not only on December 10, but for years to come.  If you don’t have skates or a helmet, not to worry.  The Canada 150 Skating Day Skate Bank will be available at Dakota Community Centre on December 10.

“We are thrilled to see Canada 150 Skating Day being celebrated in 17 communities across Canada. Skating is part of our culture and to see our vibrant Skate Canada Clubs joining in on the Canada 150 celebrations is very special,” said Debra Armstrong, CEO, Skate Canada. “We would like to thank the Government of Canada and Rogers Communications for their support in bringing to life our vision of inspiring all Canadians to embrace the joy of skating.”

“What an exceptional year 2017 has been! As we begin our last month of celebrations, I invite Canadians from all over this great country to come together in their community and lace up their skates to take part in Canada 150 Skating Day. On December 10, join your family and friends for the year’s coolest skating party and celebrate this great moment in our country’s history!” said The Honorable Mélanie Joly, Minister of Canadian Heritage.

“Rogers is proud to sponsor Canada 150 Skating Day, a wonderful initiative that brings communities together in a very Canadian way. Supporting local events and investing in our communities is something our company and employees are passionate about and we are pleased that skate banks will provide an opportunity for everyone to take part,” said Colin Bartlett, Regional Leader, Prairies from Rogers Communications. “Our employees and their families look forward to getting out on the ice in rinks across the country with their fellow Canadians.”

Canada 150 Skating Day will be one of the final events in the year-long celebration marking Canada’s 150th anniversary.
