Canadian trampoline gymnasts cap off Sr. Pan American Championships with nine medals
Gymnastics Canada – LIMA, PER (September 9, 2018) – Team Canada trampoline gymnasts finished off the 2018 Sr. Pan American Championships in Lima, Peru this weekend, winning nine medals including five gold, three silver, and one bronze.
2018 Canadian individual and synchronized trampoline champion Sophiane Méthot of La Prairie, QC was Canada’s top winner this weekend, winning two gold medals in individual and synchronized trampoline.
“The competition went really well today, I’m really happy with my results in both the synchro and individual finals,” said Méthot following competition. “Standing on the podium twice is exciting and being able to do it with Sarah for synchro is always a great feeling. I’m going to keep working towards future competitions and continuing to work on my routines and adding more height throughout.”
Méthot joined forces with Sarah Milette of Longueuil, QC to finish first in the women’s synchro final with by almost five points. The women scored 46.140 points to secure the gold medal.
“I’m really pleased with our synchro routine for this competition,” said Milette. “My individual competition didn’t go as planned and I’m going to keep working hard on all the elements of my routines to ensure they’re solid moving forward.”
Eleven-time Canadian trampoline champion, Jason Burnett of Toronto, ON captured the silver medal in the men’s individual trampoline final before joining Keegan Soehn of Red Deer, AB, and Jake Cranham of Whitby, ON, and Trevor Stirling of Kelowna, BC in the trampoline team final where they captured the gold with a combined 173.380 points.
Soehn joined Stirling in the men’s synchronized trampoline event where they rounded out the podium in third place with a score of 43.840.
On Saturday night, both the women and men’s double mini-trampoline (DMT) teams landed on the podium with the women capturing gold and the men taking home the silver. Haley Nakonechni of Emerald Park, SK, Danielle Grieve of Regina, SK, and Laurence Roux of Laval, QC scored a combined 99.600 points to finished just .100 points ahead of Argentina for the gold.
Gymanstics Canada – The men’s DMT team of Mark Armstrong of Red Deer, AB, Connar Tomalty of Langley, BC, Callum Sundquist of Sherwood Park, AB, and Ryan Sheehan of Grande Prairie, AB scored a combined 96.400 points to finish with the silver medal.
In the men’s DMT final on Sunday, Sundquist added to his medal haul and scored 71.500 points to stand atop the podium with a gold medal. Teammate and fellow team silver medallist Sheehan finished fourth with 65.000 points.
“I’m pretty happy with how the competition went this weekend,” said Sundquist. “I was a little worried after the first pass today, but the second one went really well. So overall, it was a great performance. I’m really happy to represent Canada at this competition, I’ve always wanted to be a part of the national team and to have these results is awesome.”
Roux also added a second medal to her haul in the women’s DMT final, finishing just .100 points back of first place to secure the silver medal with a score of 66.300 points. Grieve finished fourth with 59.300 points.
Next up for many of these athletes are the Trampoline Gymnastics World Championships which will take place in St. Petersburg, Russia from November 7th to 11th, 2018.
