Canada’s next generation of archers brought home 11 medals, including three gold from the 2024 Youth & Masters Pan Am Championships held in San Salvador, El Salvador from May 6 to 12 and secured three quota spots for the 2025 Junior Pan American Games to be held in Asuncion, Paraguay in July 2025. Canadian masters’ athletes also brought home 1 gold, and 1 silver medal. 

With competition for U15, U18, U21, and 50+ athletes in recurve, compound, and barebow, Canada sent a team of 27 youth, and 3 masters’ to this biennial event to gain valuable experience on the international stage as they build toward the 2025 Youth World Championships being held in Winnipeg, MB next summer.

“This gave us a good platform for us to see where our youth athletes are currently at and to prepare for the Youth World Championships next year,” said Kylah Cawley, High Performance Manager for Archery Canada. “Our youth categories were hit pretty hard by COVID, so it’s nice to see them bounce back and to see the level of success they were able to obtain at this event going into a World Championships next year. It definitely ignited a lot of motivation into the athletes and they’re all super excited to try out for that team.”

A separate qualification event was held to secure quota spots for the 2025 Junior Pan American Games and saw Kurtis Ng of Toronto, ON earn a quota spot for Canada with his gold medal performance in the U21 men’s recurve competition. Audrey Khan Arevalo of Toronto, ON and Janna Hawash of Cambridge, ON secured two more spots for Canada by taking silver in the U21 women’s recurve doubles competition. 

Harkunwar Singh Teja of Brampton, ON set two new Pan American Championship records on the way to winning gold in the U15 men’s compound competition. He set a score of 682 in the qualification round and a score of 145 in the gold medal match to take the win. Dragos Olarescu of Timmins, ON dominated the 50+ men’s barebow competition to win gold with a 6-0 score over Hector Vigil of El Salvador, and Dustin Watson (Lakefield, ON), Trevor Hoy (Peterborough, ON), and Damon Polowaniuk (Sturgeon County, AB) won gold in U21 men’s team compound – also with a new Pan American Championship record of 233. 

Hawash, Khan Arevalo, and Zohy Wilson of Peterborough, ON set a new Pan American Championship record of 1830 in the qualification rounds on their way toward taking home silver in U21 women’s team recurve, and Angela Foley of Surrey, BC captured silver in the 50+ women’s barebow event. 

Hawash secured her third medal of the week taking home bronze in the U21 women’s recurve individual event after setting another Pan American Championship record of 631 in the qualification rounds.

Polowaniuk added to his medal collection when he teamed up with Chyler Sanders of Winnipeg, MB to take bronze in the U21 mixed compound team event. Also coming home with bronze medals are Kylie Oliver of Toronto, ON in U18 women’s recurve, Seth Johnson of Prince George, BC in U18 men’s compound,, and the U18 men’s recurve team of Keshav Kumar (Mississauga, ON), Sahil Sahota (Calgary, AB), and Daniel Boutin (Montreal, QC), and the U18 mixed compound team of Anya Pinel (Dubreuilville, ON) and Riley Warwa (Sherwood Park, AB).
