Bowls Canada Boulingrin – Day one complete and Team Canada is looking to capitalize on the momentum of some stellar performances on the green as they head into day two of the 34-nation World Bowls Championships.

Kelly McKerihen (Toronto, ON) made her presence known on opening day.  McKerihen made it three for three including a big win against former Commonwealth Champion and hometown favourite Jo Edwards of New Zealand (21-16).  Other wins included Wales (21-16) and Guernsey (21-15).  McKerihen has powered her way to the top of the section leaderboard going into day two.

Leanne Chinery (Victoria, BC), Shirley Fitzpatrick-Wong (Winnipeg, MB), Jacqueline Foster (Bridgetown, NS) and Pricilla Westlake (Delta, BC) were not able to get a win on the board despite strong team play throughout the day.  The gusty winds made for difficult conditions on the green, at one point actually blowing Westlake’s bowl backwards.  In the final match of the day against Namibia, Chinery, Fitzpatrick-Wong, Foster and Westlake were tied up coming home and dropped four to lose 24-20.  Other games included South Africa (14-18) and Ireland 14-16.

On the men’s side, Ryan Bester (Hanover, ON) and Steven Santana (North Vancouver, BC) started the morning off with a win over Singapore pairs Chiak and Huang (22-14). Despite a strong start for Bester and Santana in round two, Hong Kong China’s Po and Cheung battled back to make it 15-14 after 17 ends.  With shot bowls in the head for HKC, Bester missed three attempts to kill the jack leaving HKC with four to make the final score 19-14.  The Canadian pair rounded out the day with an afternoon win against Jersey (16-12) landing them in fifth spot. Bester and Santana are looking for wins on the green today against tough competition as they face Scot powerhouses Alex Marshall and Paul Foster, followed by England and Fiji.

The trio of Steve McKerihen (Toronto, ON), Ryan Stadnyk (Niagara Fall, ON) and Cameron Lefresne (Enfield, NS) started the morning out with a solid win over Team USA, 22-14.  In the afternoon two matches, McKerihen, Stadnyk and Lefresne had slow starts and struggled to come back.  The Men’s triples team lost to Namibia 19-11 and host New Zealand 23-8. They are currently sitting eighth in their section.
