Canada Basketball – TOWNSVILLE, AUS (April 8, 2018) – Canada’s women’s Commonwealth Games (1-1) team fell 100-61 to hosts Australia (2-0) on Sunday evening at the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games.

Alex Kiss-Rusk led Canada with a team-high 15 points and nine rebounds. Daneesha Provo added an additional 13 points of her own, while Paige Crozon shot 40 percent from beyond the arc and finished with 10 points.

A slow start for Canada saw Australia open the game with 10-0 run and carry a 28-7 advantage into the second quarter.  After almost doubling their offensive output in the second quarter, the young Canadian squad found themselves trailing 50-20 at halftime.  Despite outscoring Australia 22-19 in the third quarter, the first half deficit proved to be too much for Canada to overcome.

Canada is Pool A along with Australia, England and Mozambique.

QUOTES

“This was a great environment and team to measure ourselves against tonight.  We now have a visual, and feel, for how important the details are.  We have items to clean up and items we can control.  And have the chance to apply these lessons tomorrow.” – Steve Baur, Head Coach

“We dug ourselves into a bit of a hole early but we definitely learned a lot.  We’re a young team so we’re hoping to take a lot of what we learned today forward into the rest of the tournament and hopefully we’ll get to play them again. ” – Alex Kiss-Rusk
