Canadian Association for the Advancement of Women and Sport and Physical Activity  – Toronto, February 16, 2018 – Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced the appointment of longstanding sport leader Martha (“Marty”) Deacon to the Senate of Canada on Thursday, February 15th. The appointment is a terrific acknowledgment of Ms. Deacon’s leadership and service in the sport and educational sectors, from the local to the national and international.

Ms. Deacon’s impressive resume reflects a deeply-rooted commitment to the advancement of sport participation and excellence in Canada. Her influence extends throughout the sport system, a result of her decades of involvement as an athlete, coach, team leader, board member, consultant, educator and more. Of note, Ms. Deacon is currently a Director on the Canadian Olympic Committee, as well as for Commonwealth Games Canada.

“Marty’s appointment to the Senate is wonderful recognition of her contributions to her community and to Canada, and we have no doubt that she will continue to serve Canadians well in this role. We are thrilled that the sport system has another champion in the Senate, and to see a female sport leader achieve such a distinguished position,” said Allison Sandmeyer-Graves, CEO of CAAWS.
