Gymnastics Canada – RIO DE JANEIRO, BRA (August 13, 2016) – Jason Burnett of Toronto, ON laid down two solid routines during the men’s trampoline competition in Rio de Janeiro on Saturday but it wasn’t enough to advance to the finals, leaving him in 14th place overall.

The gymnasts complete two routines in the qualifying round – the first is a compulsory routine of 10 skills, while the second is an optional routine, also of 10 skills, but which can’t contain any of the skills performed in the first routine. The top-8 athletes from the qualifying rounds advance to the finals.

Burnett scored 49.320 in his first routine to sit 7th. In his second routine, he scored 54.395 for a total of 103.715 leaving him 14th.

“The second routine I struggled to gain stability on those first three bounces getting up to height, and eventually just chose one to take off for that first skill but unfortunately that sent me on a bit of an unstable path so it was a struggle to get to skill 10,” said Burnett following the competition. “I’m pleased that I was able to go out there and do 20 skills and represent Canada’s best.”

Uladzislau Hancharou of Belarus took the gold medal, followed by Dong Dong of China, the defending Olympic gold medallist taking silver. Dong’s teammate Lei Gao, the 2015 World Champion, took the bronze.

The gymnastics competition continues Sunday with BC’s Shallon Olsen competing in the vault finals, and Isabela Onyshko wrapping up the Olympic gymnastics competition for Canada on Monday in the balance beam final.
