Ontario Soccer Association – Vaughan Azzurri will take on FC London at the Ontario Soccer Centre on Oct. 15 at 4 p.m.

Oct. 11, 2016 | Vaughan, ON – The League1 Ontario Men’s Division final is set and it’s looking like it will potentially be a sell-out event on Saturday.

Vaughan Azzurri, the East Conference champions, will take on FC London, the West Conference champion, on October 15 at the Ontario Soccer Centre Stadium. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m.

Dino Rossi, the League1 Ontario commissioner, is expecting a big, boisterous crowd.

“Both these clubs have loyal fan bases and we’re expecting the stadium to be bouncing on Saturday,” Rossi said. “FC London is one of our newest clubs but has a rich history. They will take on one of our original clubs, with its own rich history, setting up what will be an unforgettable evening.”

The Azzurri were dominant all year – having lost only one regular season game – and finished top of the East by a whopping eight points. They also captured the L1 Cup trophy in July, which sets the stage for Vaughan to be the first club in league history to potentially do the double, winning both the cup tournament and league title in the same season.

“Every game we step on the field we want to win ‑ big, small, medium level game – we want to win. That’s what we look for, not necessarily the double or triple. We just want to make sure we do the best we can with every roll of the ball and let the results lie where they may,” said Carmine Isacco, Vaughan Azzurri head coach.

FC London had a much more difficult route to their first placed finish in the West. They faced off against Sigma FC in a do-or-die match at the Marconi Club in London. Lifted by a raucous atmosphere, London cruised to a 5-0 win, booking their place in the final.

“It has been a long season and even with some player movement, we’ve been able to continue the winning momentum at the beginning of the year. Hat’s off to Michael Marcoccia and Mario Despotovic, head coaches of the Women’s and Men’s teams respectively for managing players, injuries, school and new entries with perfection,” said Ian Campbell, President of FC London. “As we move toward the final on the Men’s side we’re looking to repeat what we’ve been able to do with the Women’s team and hold the cup high after 90 minutes.”

The winner of Saturday’s Championship Final will advance to compete for the Inter-Provincial Cup in November, where they will face CS Mont-Royal Outremont, who have repeated as champions of the PLSQ.

Tickets for League1 Ontario Men’s Division Final are available online for $12 or for $15 at the door. On game day, anyone wearing Vaughan Soccer Club or FC London club gear will get $2 off the price of admission at the door.
