BC Rugby – Kickoff an exciting week of Rugby with a FREE Rookie Rugby Event in Vancouver! Vancouver, BC – March 2, 2017: Ahead of the HSBC Canada Sevens Tournament, a free “TRY Rookie Rugby” event will be held on March 5th from 12:00pm to 2:00pm at Trillium Park in Vancouver for anyone wishing to give the sport a go. “Rookie Rugby” is a fun, non-contact form of Rugby designed for elementary-aged children.

The Rookie Rugby sessions will be run by Canada’s National Players, including Rugby Canada Maple Leafs player Jake Thiel: “Having grown up playing both mini and age grade rugby for my local club [Abbotsford RFC] I am very excited and proud to be participating in this great event. It’s the perfect opportunity for young players and their families to come out and get a feel for what rugby has to offer as a whole – not just on the field but as a community.”

During the event, participants and parents are also able to watch a mini rugby jamboree and learn more about local rugby clubs and programs in BC. Attendees will also have a chance to win tickets to the HSBC Canada Sevens tournament at BC Place on March 11th & 12th. Additionally, one lucky participant will win the exclusive opportunity to be the official HSBC Ball Carrier.

BC Rugby is excited for young people to explore the sport as Annabel Kehoe, BC Rugby Chief Executive Officer adds, “Rugby is alive and well in BC and the HSBC Canada Sevens Tournament provides a spotlight for us to demonstrate the numerous opportunities that exist, so to anyone considering Rugby, I invite you to join us at Trillium Park this Sunday to experience a great team sport that is supported by a wonderful, passionate and fun community.”

Parents are encouraged to dress their kids in weather appropriate athletic wear, with cleats or runners, and to bring a water bottle with their child’s name on it.
