sets the pace at the
2016 NSGA Women’s Amateur & Senior Championship!
The first round of the 2016 Women’s Amateur and Senior got underway today at the Brightwood Golf Club in Dartmouth. The day got off to a special start this morning when Barb Winges hit the ceremonial first ball at 7:20am. Mrs. Winges has been a member of the Brightwood Golf Club for more than 60 years. 2016 marks the 100th Anniversary of the Women’s Division at Brightwood.
 
Anne Balser from the Links of Brunello got off to a great start today after carding an opening round 72 (+4).  Balser started off strong after birding her first two opening holes. Balser, the 2011 Nova Scotia Women’s Amateur Champion, had a total of three birdies, three bogeys and two doubles to finish her round and has a six-stroke lead heading into the second round.
 
Tied for second place are NSGA Junior Development Team member, Allison Chandler from Chester and Mireille LeBlanc (Clare) who is two time Women’s Amateur Champion (2008, 2010). The pair finished their first round with 78 (+10).
 
Defending Senior Champion, Ruth Maxwell from Oakfield fired a four over par 75 during the opening round of the 2016 Senior Championship. Maxwell is looking to capture her third straight Senior title. Finishing one stroke behind Maxwell is Debi Karrel from Ashburn. Karrel the 2010 Senior Champion has a three stroke lead over Fay Gunter of Grandview.
 
The top three golfers and an alternate from both the Amateur and Senior will be selected to the Nova Scotia Team at their respective National Championships.
 
The 2016 Canadian Women’s Amateur Nationals will be held at the Ken-Wo Golf Club from July 26th– 29th
 
The Canadian Women’s Senior Nationals will be hosted at Wolf Creek Golf Resort in Alberta85 from August 24th– 26th.
 
In addition to the National Teams, Nova Scotia will be selecting three (3) amateurs, three (3) mid-masters, three (3) seniors and 1 super senior to represent Nova Scotia at the Atlantic Golf Championships on August 19-21 at Fox Meadow Golf Course in Prince Edward Island.
