Ottawa, June 10, 2023 – The United States beat Canada in three sets (25-22, 25-20, 25-20) on Saturday in front of an enthusiastic sell-out crowd at Ottawa’s Arena at TD Place on the second last day of action of the opening week of men’s Volleyball Nations League.

The USA, who are yet to concede a set this week, dominated in attack and serve. Matthew Anderson (18 points) and Aaron Russell (17) led the attack for the winners. Arthur Szwarc (14) and Stephen Maar (12) were the top scorers for Canada.
The U.S. team moved to the lead early in the game and did not relinquish as they went on to claim the opening set 25-22.

The 2022 VNL silver medallists kept the momentum in the second set, displaying a solid attack and defense. The lead increased to five points as the set progressed and they went to take it 25-20.

Canada returned to the court ready to play: Two solid spikes by Arthur Szwarc put the host team in the lead temporarily 6-5 and stayed in contention as the set reached 10 points each side. The strong USA attack and powerful serve started to make a bigger difference in the score as they built an 18-11 lead. Canada attempted a comeback, but the Americans secured their third 3-0 sweep of the week.

“We played better than yesterday, against one of the best teams in the world. We started slow, but we fought back. This is a long tournament, so we need everyone on the team,” said Canada’s head coach Tuomas Sammelvuo.

Canada’s Arthur Szwarc (Toronto, ON) commended his on-court synergy with teammate Stephen (Maar). “We played together this past season in Monza (Italy), and we have a very good connection. It’s very easy playing alongside him.
Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough. Even though we did not win, we had a lot of positive things today. We have a brand-new team this year, in the process of changing. I am part of the older guys here. It’s a different role, trying to keep the young guys engaged.”

Canada is 1-2 so far and will seek a second victory on their last game of the week Sunday against Germany.
