Gymnastics Canada – MEDELLIN, COL (April 29, 2018) – David Sandro of Acton, ON was the top Canadian on the final day of the 2018 Pacific Rim Championships in Medellin, Colombia – capturing four medals in the junior men’s artistic gymnastics individual apparatus finals – including gold on high bar. In total, Team Canada collected 20 medals on the final day of competition, and 30 medals overall across the four disciplines of men’s and women’s artistic, rhythmic, and trampoline during the course of the competition.

Sandro, who trains out of Gold Medal Gymnastics, also took bronze medals on floor, pommel horse, and vault.

“My highlight from today was definitely my gold medal routine on high bar because it let me see where I stack up against the best in the Pacific region. I had a sketchy fall in warm-up, so I needed to get my act together, and that’s exactly what I did,” said Sandro, who also captured a silver medal in the team competition on Friday. “I’m still really proud of how our team did. Usually when we compete internationally, it still feels somewhat independent, but at this competition, we were hyping each other like crazy – it truly felt like we were on a giant team – it was awesome.”

Fellow junior athlete Felix Dolci of Laval, QC finished with a silver on rings, while Evgeny Siminiuc of Mississauga, ON also captured silver on parallel bars. Chris Kaji of Vancouver, BC was the lone senior to medal in men’s artistic, capturing a bronze on rings.

In women’s artistic gymnastics, it was Montrealer Zoé Allaire-Bourgie who came out on top, winning a total of three medals in the junior finals including a gold on balance beam, silver on uneven bars, and bronze on floor.

“I was happy to be able to show everyone what I was capable of doing and I want to thank my coaches for all their support. I loved the experience of being in a team with seniors and juniors!” said Allaire-Bourgie who trains out of Gymnix in Montreal, QC.

Imogen Paterson of Vancouver, BC was the other junior to capture a medal – a bronze on vault.

On the senior side, Haley De Jong of Vancouver was the top performer, winning gold on uneven bars, and bronze on floor: “I am amazed by this week, we had the best team and the most fun accomplishing everything! I want to thank my coaches and teammates for supporting me through the whole week and I was thrilled to make Canada proud.”

Sophie Marois of Île Bizard, QC also captured a bronze on vault.

In rhythmic gymnastics, it was junior athletes Michel Vivier of Vaughn, ON and Natalie Garcia of Mississauga, ON who led the team, each capturing three medals from the individual apparatus finals. Vivier captured silver in hoop, and bronze in clubs and ribbon, while Garcia captured silver in clubs, and bronze in hoop and ball.

“In the morning I was nervous knowing that I had four apparatus finals today, but at the same time, I was excited and driven to perform each routine better than in the all-around competition. I am so happy with my performances today. This was a great preparation for the Junior Pan American Championships next weekend,” said Garcia.

Senior athlete Jaedyn Andreotti of Kamloops, BC scored a career high of 15.133 to take the silver medal in hoop – in her first competition as a senior.
