Primary Purpose

The Assistant Coaches work with Canada Basketball staff in delivering the Junior Academy curriculum to 40 chosen players born in 2011 and 2012. The program will consist of a two-day open tryout in September followed by six weekend sessions running throughout October-May. Dates are still being confirmed.

Selected coaches will take part in an interview prior to the open tryout. The tryout will be used as part of the selection process for coaches. A short list of coaches will be asked to attend the open tryout as your evaluation after the interview process. You must complete the qualifications below to participate. The coaching staff will be in place in advance of the first weekend session of the program.

Qualifications

Education

  • Has started NCCP coach education or willingness to start and complete the required training. Upon completion of coaching throughout the JRA program, coaches will receive 3 professional development points towards their maintenance of certification.
  • Complete Safe Sport training (see PDF), background check, sign OSIC Agreement

Experience

  • Possess a knowledge of the technical and tactical aspects of basketball required for U12/13 aged female players.
  • Has experience coaching or playing basketball.
  • Demonstrates the ability to identify, implement, monitor and grow the podium behaviours required by U12/13 aged female athletes, both on and off the court.
  • Possess knowledge of the Long-Term Athlete Development model (LTAD) and understands the best practices for athlete development at the specific stage and age of the U12/13 female players.
  • Experience using different methods of positive communication to adapt and respond to changing environments.
  • Awareness of BAHD (bulling, abuse, harassment and discrimination) coaching behaviors and has eliminated these practices.
  • Has the ability to work as a member of a team of dedicated professionals in the pursuit of common goals.
  • Has a demonstrated passion for basketball and working with developing players.

Responsibilities

Athletes, Integrated Support Team, and Staff

  • Foster a high-performance culture in all facets of the team environment. Be a transformational coach in the lives of the players.
  • Work with Canada Basketball staff in running effective practices and off court sessions.
  • Develop athletes in line with the Canada Basketball style of play.
  • Contribute to the development of Individual Performance Plans for athletes, in collaboration with the Canada Basketball staff and Integrated Support Team.
  • Evaluate the progress of athletes throughout the Junior Academy season and track and monitor prospective Junior Academy athletes in their respective daily training environments, both remotely and in-person, where possible.
  • Ensure compliance with the Canada Basketball Code of Conduct and be in good standing with your current basketball association and Basketball Ontario.

Canada Basketball Management and Office

  • Participate in post-session debriefs to assess and evaluate athletes and the program.
  • Assist in the development of a positive image for basketball in Canada by maintaining professional conduct and appearance on and off the court.
  • Communicate in a timely manner with the Canada Basketball Office in all matters related to involvement of the Junior Academy.
  • Be available for meetings as necessary and as requested by Canada Basketball.
