Cassie Sharpe Finishes the World Cup Season With a Taste of Gold
Freestyle Canada – Tignes, France, March 7, 2017 – Cassie Sharpe led the Canadian halfpipe squad in Tignes, France finishing first in the women’s halfpipe final. This was the season’s last halfpipe world cup and the last chance for athletes to polish their runs prior to the FIS World Championships in Sierra Nevada, Spain.
Cassie has had a challenging year, battling both injuries and a tedious competition schedule. She seemed to pull it all together today as she unleashed on the pristine pipe and landed the first ever switch cork 720 by a woman in a contest run. She scored a 90.80 on her third run to lock in the top spot. This result will boost Cassie’s confidence and put the rest of the contenders on notice as she looks forward to the FIS World Championships.
“I was feeling good from training in Korea and managed to qualify first. We weren’t sure the finals were going to happen, as it snowed over two feet. The crew did a great job of maintaining the pipe and around 4 p.m. the clouds parted and it was blue skies… I landed the switch cork 720 in Korea, and kept it a secret… When I saw that I was in the lead dropping into my third run, I decided to put it all on the line and landed the first ever switch cork 720 by a woman in a contest run,” said Cassie Sharpe.
Teammate Rosalind Groenewoud slid her way into the top 10, finishing in 8th position.
On the men’s side, Brendan Mackay, Noah Bowman and Simon D’Artois finished fifth, sixth and 10th, respectively. This was Brendan’s first appearance at a World Cup and he managed to make his way to the final.
The team will celebrate, regroup and get ready for next Saturday’s halfpipe event at the FIS World Championships.
