Gymnastics Canada – CALGARY, AB (May 7, 2017) – Canadian women led the way on the final day of the Canada Cup Trampoline Gymnastics competition in Calgary, Alberta on Sunday, winning two gold medals and one bronze medal.

Jordan Sugrim of Dymano Gymnastics Club dominated the competition in the Senior Women’s Tumbling final scoring 133.200 point and capturing the gold medal. Sugrim’s performance was so good, she finished 13 points ahead of her second place competitor from the United States.

“Today was really, really good!” said Sugrim following competition. “I competed last weekend and it wasn’t my best performance, so this weekend was a big confidence boost leading into nationals and World Games. I think I needed to relax a little, I knew a lot of the other competitors this weekend haven’t seen me before so I was actually really excited to show my passes. I wanted to show people that even though I’m older, I’m still doing the harder passes.”

Synchro trampoline duo Sarah Milette and Sophiane Méthot of Virtuose Gymnastics Club gave it their all today and won the gold medal in the Senior Synchro Trampoline final scoring 121.920 points and finishing almost 15 points ahead of the silver medalists from Belarus. Milette won the gold medal on Saturday in the trampoline final, while Méthot finished less than half a point back to take home the silver medal.

In the Senior Women’s Double Mini Trampoline final, Tamara O’Brien from Shasta Trampoline Club moved up from qualifying in fourth place overall to finishing in third place and standing on the podium. O’Brien scored 70.500 points to win the bronze medal, less than one point was the difference between silver and bronze.

Following competition, O’Brien was pleased with her result; “I’m extremely happy after today’s performance! I hit a personal best so that was really exciting,” she said. When asked what it was like to compete against international athletes on home soil, O’Brien saw the benefit; “Having the international girls here affected my performance in a positive way. These girls are going to be some of the best in the world and to compete against them and see what they’re doing is great to look forward to. It inspires me to watch and learn from them and get back to the gym to work harder.”

Brothers Kyle and Keegan Soehn of Thunder Country Trampoline and Gymnastics Club gave the Belarusian pair a run for their money in the Senior Synchro Trampoline final, but came up short and finished in second place. The men scored 136.800 points in their silver medal performance, less than three points back of the gold medal.

Jon Schwaiger of Dynamo Gymnastics finished in fifth place overall in the Senior Double Mini Trampoline final and fourth in the Senior Tumbling final. Schwaiger will be joining Sugrim and O’Brien at the 2017 World Games in Poland in July. “I will be working on my execution and cleaning up a couple things in my tumbling routine,” said Schwaiger when asked what he will take moving forward from the Canada Cup. “My goal for the World Games is to make finals in both Tumbling and Double Mini Trampoline and take it from there.”

The Trampoline Gymnastics Canadian Championships will be held from July 12 – 16, 2017 in Oshawa, ON.
