Golf Ontario – Another tie atop the leaderboard after second round at the Investors Group Ontario Senior Men’s AmateurChampionship
Second round of the Investors Group Ontario Senior Men’s Amateur Championship took place today at Dalewood Golf Club in Cobourg. It got underway this morning at 9:30, two hours behind schedule thanks to some very heavy fog. When the fog cleared and golf resumed, the leaderboard was able to take shape. That shape ended up being a three way tie at the top.
Mark Brewer of Whitevale Golf Club, Michael Mealia of Bayview Golf & Curling Club and Tim Southcott of Glencalm Golf Club all find themselves at even par for the tournament. Brewer shot a -1 on the day (70) including an eagle on the par 5 16th hole. Mealia and Southcott both shot their second consecutive even par round (71). Mealia when asked about his round today said “I scored well, I didn’t necessarily hit the ball great, but I scored well”. He added the course has a lot offer “It’s a good golf course, it challenges all parts of your game“. His game plan tomorrow when asked “Well mindset is we’ll get on the first tee and try and hit the fairway and if we hit the fairway we’ll look at the second shot”. Three players sit a shot back at +1 tied for fourth.
A notable round of the day was home course (Dalewood GC) player Chris Markle with a -1 and sits at +8. Fellow home turf golfer Chris Mcivor sits at +6 while Bob Arsenault is at +8. All three players made the cut which is sitting at +13.
Kerry Short of St. Catherines Golf & Country Club leads the 65+ category shooting a +1 overall (70), (73) while the over 70 category is led by Michael Kelly of Pakenham Highlands Golf Club who sits at +4 overall (73), (73).
In addition to the title itself, the golfers are looking to claim one of the Canadian Men‘s Senior Championship qualifying spots and the top three finishers will earn the right to represent Ontario in the inter-provincial competition at the Canadian Men’s Senior Championship September 4-7 at Gowan Brae Golf Club. The final round goes tomorrow morning with tee offs scheduled to start at 7:30.

The Investors Group Ontario Senior Men’s Championship is contested annually and features Ontario’s best male amateur golfers age 55 and older. 2018 marks the 83rd playing of the event and notable past champions include: Ontario Golf Hall of Fame members Stu Hamilton and Nick Weslock, Herb Carnegie, Ed Ervasti, and Michael Jackson.
