CCAA – VALDIVIA, CHILE – The U18 Women’s National Basketball team is coming up home with silver medals after losing 109-62 to Team USA over the weekend the final of the 2016 FIBA Americas U18 Women’s Championship.

Andrea Torres of Collège Montmorency in Laval, QC, suited up for Canada at the tournament. Torres, who has two years of eligibility left with the Nomades in the RSEQ, appeared in the 2016 CCAA Women’s Basketball National Championship at St. Clair College in Windsor, ON.

Torres suited up in four of Canada’s five matches, the highlight being a nine-point performance vs. Chile. Playing against the host country was extra special for Torres, whose grandfather once played for the Chilean national team.

In the final, team captain Mikaela Brewer paced Canada with 16 points, while Alyssa Jerome recorded 12 points and eight rebounds.

“We were beaten by a strong USA team that shot the lights out tonight,” said Canada’s head coach, Carly Clarke. “We executed our game plan early but they wore us down towards the end of the first half and we were unable to rebound from it.”

Prior to Sunday’s contest, Team Canada was 4-0 at Americas, winning its games by an average of 27 points.

The second-place finish equals Canada’s best results in the history of FIBA Americas U18 Women’s Championships. By finishing in the top four at this tournament, Canada qualifies for next summer’s FIBA U19 Women’s World Championships.
