Synchro Canada – The pair from Montreal finished in 6th place in mixed duet tech event in today’s finals and Canada’s soloist sits 5th in solo free after prelims.

 

OTTAWA, July 17, 2017 – In the Mixed Duet Technical Routine, Canada’s duet of Isabelle Blanchet-Rampling, 31, and Robert Prévost, 37, improved their score from the preliminary round to finish 6th with 82.3413 in the final. Italy took the gold medal, Russian the silver, and the US won bronze. Although pleased with their performance, they are continuing to train hard, and are looking forward to swimming the Free Routine, in the Prelims on Friday, July 21st and in the Final on Saturday, July 22nd.

The preliminary round of the Solo Free event was also held today. With 32 competitors in the field, Montreal’s Jacqueline Simoneau, 20, continued to demonstrate her world-class capabilities, finishing 5th in the event, which determines the top 12 qualifiers for Wednesday’s Final. Russian Svetlana Kolesnichenko was in first, Ona Carbonell of Spain was second and Anna Voloshyna of Ukraine was in third. Simoneau scored 89.8333 for the routine, and after the competition, she summed up her performance by saying, “I think I performed well, and I am satisfied with this qualification result.”

What’s happening tomorrow, July 18, in Budapest

Canada’s Team Tech will be competing in the finals and will go 6th of the 12 teams that qualified. The event starts at 11:00 am local time (5:00 am EDT) and will be featured on CBC’s live stream coverage beginning at 4:50 am (EDT) on cbc.ca/sports.
 
Tech team members are the following: Janelle Ball, 24 (Dollard-des-Ormeaux, QC); Andrée-Anne Côté, 19 (St-Georges, QC); Claudia Holzner, 23 (Calgary, AB); Gwendolyn McGuire, 19 (Sherwood Park, AB); Samantha Nealon, 23 (Morriston, ON); Elizabeth Savard, 21 (Laval, QC); Jacqueline Simoneau, 20 (Montréal, QC) and Kali Wong, 20 (Calgary, AB). Gabrielle Boisvert, 23 (Cap Rouge, QC) and Gabriella Brisson, 23 (Calgary, AB) are the alternates.
 
Jacqueline Simoneau and Claudia Holzner will pair again for the Free Duet Prelims, beginning at 7:00 pm local time (1:00 pm EDT). Their highly artistic Free Routine begins to Tore My Heart by Oona and concludes with Haunting Me, also by Oona. This story of heartbreak allows the two to show a more emotional side of swimming while still weaving speed, difficult angles, creativity and great height into the routine. Canada’s duet will be the 21st to swim amongst the 43 pairs competing.
