Schedule, participating provinces announced for 2016 Women’s National Championship in Regina
Football Canada – Inaugural women’s tackle championship kicks-off Thursday July 28
Ottawa (July 26, 2016) – Provincial tackle football teams from Alberta, New Brunswick, Quebec, and host Saskatchewan will take part in the inaugural Women’s National Championship, July 28-31 in Regina, Saskatchewan.
While provinces battle for the title of national champion, the 2016 women’s nationals will also serve as the start of the identification process for Canada’s Women’s National Team, scheduled to compete at the 2017 International Federation of American Football (IFAF) Women’s World Championship (WWC).
The opening day of action begins Thursday at Regina’s Mosaic Stadium as Alberta takes on Quebec at 4 p.m. (local time) while New Brunswick faces host Saskatchewan at 7:30 p.m.
The winning and losing provinces will move on to play one another in the second day of competition on Sunday July 31 at 4:30 and 7:30 p.m., respectively. Sunday’s championship game between the two winning teams from day one is tentatively scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Due to travel arrangements, if Quebec wins on opening day, the championship game would be moved to 4:30 p.m. which would be followed by the consolation final at 7:30 p.m.

The event builds off the 2012 Women’s Challenge Cup held in Montreal. The Challenge Cup hosted provincial teams from Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Quebec and Atlantic Canada in a weekend celebration of women’s football which included integrated practices, mini-games as well as development opportunities for mentor coaches.
Canada won a pair of silver medals at the inaugural 2010 WWC in Sweden and 2013 WWC in Finland.
In preparation for 2017, Canada returns head coach, Jeff Yausie (Saskatoon Valkryies) along with defensive coordinator, Pierre Migner (Montreal Blitz) and special teams coordinator, Olivier Eddie (Regina Riot). The returning trio from Canada’s 2013 coaching staff is joined by incoming offensive coordinator Ryan Clutterbuck.
