Rio 2016: Canadian morning wrap-up on day 8: Rivard and Huot headed to swimming finals / wheelchair rugby win in overtime
 
Sept. 14, 2016 – Rio de Janeiro, Brazil – Para-swimmer Aurélie Rivard qualified in first place for the women’s S10 400-m freestyle and veteran Benoit Huot earned another crack at a 20th career medal in day eight morning action at the Paralympic Games.
 
In the para-canoe finals, Christine Gauthier of Dorval, Que., placed fourth in the women’s KL2 while Erica Scarff of Mississauga, Ont., was seventh in the KL3 final. This was the first time para-canoe is on the Paralympic Games program.
 
In athletics, Guillaume Ouellet of Quebec City also posted a fourth place finish in the men’s S13 5000-m. Ouellet is the reigning world champion in the event.
 
In the pool, Rivard qualified first for the S10 women’s 400-m freestyle. She already has two gold and a silver at the Games. It was in the 400 free that she won the silver medal at the London Paralympics in 2012. The final is at 6:07 p.m.
 
Huot had the fourth fastest time in heats in the men’s S10 400-m freestyle. He would love nothing more than to leave Rio with a 20th career medal. The final is at 5:57 p.m.
 
In another morning final, Canada’s Lauren Barwick took seventh spot in the Individual championship test – Grade II equestrian event.
 
In boccia, Alison Levine of Montreal lost her quarterfinal 3-2 to Pornchok Larpyen of Thailand in the BC4 individual event.
