Canadian Luge Association – Canadian Luge Squad to Share Olympic Medals with Calgary Elementary School Students
—Medal winning team to make first public appearance at Holy Name School, February 28—
CALGARY—Canada’s luge team will slide into Calgary’s Holy Name School where they will share their Olympic medals with more than 400 students in the team’s first public appearance since making history in PyeongChang, Korea.
Alex Gough, Sam Edney, and Justin Snith will leverage their Olympic medal-winning performances to deliver a string of powerful messages to the Kindergarten to Grade 6 students during a highly-visual visit to the school on Pink Shirt Day to help support the prevention of bullying, February 28, from 1-3 p.m.
Encouraging the importance of living healthier and more active lives, clean sport and promoting child literacy, the athletes will lead students through a series of activities during an interactive presentation in the gymnasium that will include a demonstration of the world’s fastest sliding sport. The team will then join the kids in the classrooms where they will read stories and share their euphoric Olympic experience that pulled on the heart strings of all Canadians.
Once struggling in relative obscurity in the Olympic world, the luge squad delivered Canadians two of the most emotional performances at the 2018 Olympic Winter Games where they broke through to win the country’s first two medals in the history of the sport. Alex Gough became the first Canadian ever to win an Olympic medal in the sport when she won the bronze in women’s singles. The four-time Olympian then brought the nation to their feet after joining Edney, Tristan Walker and Justin Snith for a silver-medal triumph in the mixed team relay event.
