Kertsos new leader after second round of Investors Group Ontario Senior Men’s Championship
Golf Ontario – SCARBOROUGH — The second round of Golf Ontario’s Investors Group Senior Men’s Championship saw a familiar name rise to the top of the leaderboard, on July 26 at Cedar Brae Golf Club. Defending champion Pickering’s Christopher Kertsos had the low round of the day and is now two-strokes up on the rest of the field.
Kertsos, from York Downs Golf & Country Club, entered the day three back of the leader and found himself one-over after the first hole. However, he zoned in after that. He went on to birdie three, seven and eight, to sit at two-under at the turn. On the back nine he added a birdie the 12th and finished three-under (68). That brought his tournament total to two-under (72-68-140).
Sitting in a tie for second place are 2014 Ontario Senior Men’s Champion, Oakville’s Larry Cooper and first-round leader Orillia’s John Murphy. Cooper, from Mississaugua Golf & Country Club, entered the day two off the lead after even par (71) opening round. He equaled the feat during round two to remain even for the championship (71-71-142).
As for Murphy, a Barrie Country Club member, he entered day with a two-shot lead after a two-under (69) first round. Murphy gave some strokes back with a three-over front nine. He would finish the day strong with a birdie on the 17th and ended the round at two-over (73) to move to even (69-73-142) for the tournament.
In the 65+ Division, New Hamburg’s George Stokes and Vineland’s Kerry Short share the lead at eight-over. Stokes was eight-over (79) on the second round, to go along with his even par (71) opening round. Short followed up a four-over (75) first round with another four-over (75) on day two. As for the 70+ Division, Stokes’ eight-under is good enough for a five-stroke lead.
After the round, the field was cut to the lowest 60 scores and ties. The cut was set at 14-over (156) and 62 players advanced to the final round.
In total, 149 players began the competition. In addition to the titles, players in the field are also vying for a quota spot into the Canadian Senior Men’s Championship, Sept. 11-14 at Kanawaki Golf Club in Montreal, Quebec.
