2017 Canada Summer Games – KENORA, ON (June 24, 2017) – The excitement of the 2017 Canada Summer Games came to Kenora, Ontario today as the Manitoba Hydro Torch Relay made its second stop in the picturesque city situated on Lake of the Woods, 209 km east of Winnipeg. The relay was a way to celebrate the 29 torchbearers and build momentum for the 2017 Canada Summer Games’ rowing competitions that will take place from Monday, July 31 to Friday, August 4 at the Kenora Rowing Club on Rabbit Lake.

Elder Richard Green was the first to carry the torch at 9 a.m. at the Lake of the Wood Discovery Centre, leading a group of nine Indigenous youth torchbearers. Local residents and visitors cheered on the 40 torchbearers who travelled along 29 legs on scenic Lakeview Drive to Whitecap Pavilion. Among the torchbearers was local Canada Games alumna Katie Lockhart, who attended the 2015 Canada Winter Games in Prince George as part of Manitoba’s Biathlon team.

For a complete list of Kenora torchbearers see the event summary below.

The Manitoba Hydro Torch Relay carries the excitement of the Games throughout Manitoba. The torch was lit in Ottawa on June 6, 2017 for the official lighting ceremony. On June 21, Indigenous Elders and Grandmothers infused the Torch Relay with the spirit of the Sacred Fire, while honouring the land and waters the 2017 Canada Summer Games will be held upon.  Between June 23 and July 26, the Roly McLenahan Torch will travel to 10 communities around the province, as well as to Kenora, Ontario.
