Four medals for Canada at World Rowing Cup I

ROWING CANADA – Canadian rowers back on the water in Varese, Italy to kick off season

 
VICTORIA, Monday, April 18, 2016 – Eight Canadian crews were on the water this weekend, coming away with four medals at the first World Rowing Cup in Varese, Italy. This includes a gold medal from Carling Zeeman in the women’s single scull, one of the six crews who will be competing at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.  
 
“I was really happy with my race today,” said Zeeman, women’s single scull. “It was amazing to be cheered on in the final part of the race by my teammates and share the podium with them. If there’s anything better than a victory, it’s sharing the post-race celebrations with your teammates!” 
 
Three silver medals were added by the men’s quadruple sculls, women’s eight and lightweight women’s single scull. Close finishes by the men’s four and the lightweight women’s double sculls resulted in fourth and fifth place finishes, respectively. For full results, visit WorldRowing.com.
 
Kate Sauks won Canada’s first medal of the regatta with a second place finish on Saturday in the lightweight women’s single scull. This was her first medal at the World Cup level.
 
“I really enjoyed my first World Rowing Cup experience,” said Kate Sauks, women’s lightweight single scull. “Varese was a great venue, and it was a bonus that the weather cooperated for the most part.  Coming into this regatta I had set the goal of being a more aggressive and tactful racer, and I feel that I took a good step in that direction. Looking ahead, I hope to get another opportunity on the world stage to improve upon this performance.”
 
The Canadian team will next compete in Lucerne, Switzerland at World Rowing Cup II from May 27 – 29. The final World Cup will be held from June 17 – 19 in Poznan, Poland. Athletes competing at each of the regattas will be announced prior to each event.

Following the World Rowing Cup regattas, RCA, alongside the Canadian Olympic Committee, will announce the team of athletes competing at the Rio 2016 Olympics on Tuesday, June 28 in Toronto. Canada qualified six boats for the Olympics and one for the Paralympic Games at the World Rowing Championships in September 2015. RCA will also host media availabilities at training camps in Guelph and London, Ontario on July 23.  Details for all media events will be released closer to the date.
