Ed Comeau Named GM of Canada’s Box Lacrosse Team for 2019 World Championship
Canadian Lacrosse Association – OTTAWA, ON – The Canadian Lacrosse Association is excited to announce the appointment of Ed Comeau as the new General Manager of the Canadian men’s box lacrosse national team. He will oversee the operations of the indoor program for the remainder of the international quadrennial, culminating with the 2019 FIL World Indoor Lacrosse Championship in Langley, British Columbia next fall.
“I am honoured and excited to have been selected as the General Manager for the men’s national indoor team for 2019,” said Comeau. “My focus now shifts towards building a team that can help us win a world championship on home soil in British Columbia.”
Comeau, 52, brings a great deal of knowledge and experience to the position. The native of Hamilton, Ont. has been involved with Canada’s box lacrosse team since its inception in 2002, helping guide the team to four consecutive FIL World Indoor Lacrosse Championship gold medals.
He served as an assistant coach with the team at the 2003 and 2007 world championships, before making the jump to head coach for the 2011 and 2015 tournaments. He was also behind the bench for all four Heritage Cup international exhibition games, as both an assistant coach (2002, 2004) and head coach (2013, 2017).
After nearly a decade as head coach, Comeau is ready to let someone else lead the charge.
In his new role as General Manager of the indoor national team program, Comeau will be involved with the selection of the coaching and support staff, the establishment of team tryouts and training schedules, and the evaluation and selection of players.
“The Canadian box lacrosse program is lucky to have attracted a General Manager with Eddie’s skill set and track record,” stated Jason Donville, Director of High Performance and International Relations with the Canadian Lacrosse Association. “He is a champion on so many levels and we are grateful to have him leading our team.”
With over 20 years of coaching and managerial experience in the National Lacrosse League, it’s a role he is more than capable of doing.
He has been head coach of the Georgia Swarm since 2015, a job he also held with the Orlando Titans (2009-2010) and Rochester Knighthawks (2006-2008). He also served as an assistant coach with the Colorado Mammoth (2010-2014), Knighthawks (2004-2006) and Toronto Rock (1998-2004).
His teams have had tremendous success on the floor, capturing the Champion’s Cup a total of six times throughout his career, most recently in 2017 with Georgia, as well as in 2007 with Rochester and in 1999, 2000, 2002 and 2003 with Toronto.
He has also been recognized with numerous personal accolades, including NLL Coach of the Year in 2017 and 2007, and NLL GM of the Year in 2009 for his work with the New York Titans.
Comeau has a little over of year to prepare the national team for the 2019 FIL World Indoor Lacrosse Championship that will take place September 18-28 in Langley. He will look to assemble a squad that can capture Canada’s fifth consecutive title and help them remain a dominant force on the international stage, where they have compiled an impressive 24-0 record since 2002.
“Our national team has had great success in the past, but we know that other nations continue to challenge Canada and are working hard as they prepare for the 2019 WILC,” added Comeau.
