Canada Games Council – (August 22nd, 2016) Ottawa – Tom Quinn, Canada Games Council (CGC) Chairman, has announced that David Patterson will become the organization’s next President and CEO. The CGC Board of Directors unanimously approved the recommendation made by the selection committee following a comprehensive process that took a number of highly qualified candidates into consideration. 

“David’s exceptional leadership skills and extensive background in sport will undoubtedly benefit the Canada Games Council,” says Quinn. “We very much look forward to having him lead our team as we prepare for next summer’s 2017 Canada Games in Winnipeg.” 
David brings a wealth of experience and a proven track record to the CGC along with a strong knowledge of the organization. 

“Since 1967, the Canada Games have made an indelible mark on Canadian sport and on Canadian communities,” says Patterson. “I am honoured to have the chance to work with the key partners in the movement, an incredible staff team and a dedicated Board to help build on the 50 year legacy of  the Canada Games as a premium property that inspires dreams and builds champions.” 

A recognized leader in Canadian sport, David holds a doctorate in Human Kinetics from the University of Ottawa, a master’s degree Recreation Administration from Sacramento State University and a bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology from the University of Calgary. 

He worked as a consultant for the Canadian Olympic Committee (COC) on the National Sport Federation Enhancement Initiative where he helped implement 115 projects to enhance business functions and to increase the capacity of Canada’s National Sport Federations. David also held the role of CEO for Water Ski and Wakeboard Canada from 2012 to 2014 as well as Executive Director of Ringette Canada from 2004 to 2012.  

His vast experience in working with sport organizations along with his demonstrated skills in revenue generation are sure to help him quickly thrive in his new role.  

About the Canada Games 

Held once every two years, alternating between winter and summer, the Canada Games represent the highest level of national competition for up and coming Canadian athletes. The Games have been hosted in every province at least once since their inception in Quebec City during Canada’s Centennial in 1967. The Games are proud of their contribution to Canada’s sport development system in addition to their lasting legacy of sport facilities, community pride and national unity.  The 2017 Canada Summer Games in Winnipeg are the 50th anniversary of the Canada Games and will be held from July 28th to August 13th.  The 2019 Canada Winter Games in Red Deer will be held from February 15th to March 3rd.  The organization of the Canada Games is made possible thanks to the contribution and support of the Government of Canada, provincial/territorial governments, host municipalities and the Canada Games Council.
