Judo Canada – Montreal, April 26, 2017 – More than 800 athletes from 10 provinces and three territories are expected to participate in the Canadian Open Championships, which will be held from May 24 to 28 at Calgary’s Olympic Oval. Pointing out that the event has already sparked a high level of interest, Judo Canada confirmed that the tournament will be held in the same location for a third year in a row, up to and including the 2018 edition.

“Alberta has a very dynamic judo community that is committed to promoting the sport in Canada. We’re proud to count on its support, as well as that of the city of Calgary, of Tourism Calgary, and of the provincial government, to hold the Championships here for the next two years,” stated Nicolas Gill, CEO of Judo Canada.

In 2016, a large number of Calgarians attended the competitions, where 1,500 spectators per day witnessed the bouts in an electrifying atmosphere.

“The 2016 event had an economic impact of more than three million dollars,” noted Patrick Esparbès, Assistant Director of Judo Canada.

In addition to the financial support from Alberta, the event is backed by Judo Alberta and three local clubs: Hiro’s Judo Club, the Airdrie Judo Club, and the Ishi Yama Judo Club. With Judo Canada Hall of Fame member Allan Sattin as head of the organizing committee, all the elements are in place to make the events a success.

Cindy Ady, CEO of Tourism Calgary, explained that the community was quickly convinced to continue the adventure into 2018:
