Canadian Fencers Take Home Eight Medals in North American Cup Competition
Canadian Fencing Federation – A number of Canadian fencers travelled to Detroit for Canada’s Thanksgiving weekend to compete in the October North American Cup (NAC).
Canadians came away with 8 medals and a total of 13 top 16 finishes in the four day event which featured an average of over 150 fencers in each competition.
David Gornovsky (Sword Players, Toronto, ON) won gold in Division 2 Men’s Epee, defeating Panama’s Dorati Ameglio Arturo 15-11 in the final. Wheelchair fencer Sylvie Morel (Chevalier Dragon d’Or, Pincourt, QC) came away with three medals – silver in Women’s Epee and Women’s Foil, and bronze in Women’s Sabre.
Canadians won a number of bronze medals in Senior Division 1 competition. Kelleigh Ryan (Ottawa Fencing, Ottawa, ON) won bronze in Women’s Foil, Alexanne Verret (STH, Quebec, QC) won bronze in Women’s Epee and Rio Olympian Max Van Haaster (Coeur de Lion, Montreal, QC) came third in Men’s Foil which had a field of 233 fencers. Anne-Marie Dorval (STH, Quebec, QC) also won bronze in Division 2 Women’s Epee.
