What does good governance involve? What are the pitfalls unique to sport governance? Who is governing sport? And who governs a board of directors? These are some of the questions dominating the current discourse concerning issues of abuse in Canadian sport.

In Episode 19 of Sport, Leadership and Social Change, we will be discussing Sport Governance with webinar host Dr. Jennifer Walinga alongside Rose Mercier, certified board consultant with The Governance Coach. Personally trained in the theory and implementation of Policy Governance by John and Miriam Carver at the Policy Governance® Academy, and multi-credentialed, Rose is a Governance Systems Professional® and coach to boards implementing policy governance including non-profit organizations, public agencies and national sport governing bodies. A former National Sport Organization CEO herself, Rose brings direct insight into the Canadian sport environment as well as over 25 years experience in management, program development, and leadership training in non-profit organizations.

The 2022 Canadian Para-Bowls Championships will take place at the Windsor Lawn Bowling Club (2 Memorial Drive, Windsor, ON, N8X 5C8) from September 11-17, 2022. The event is open to any visually impaired or physically impaired lawn bowler in Canada. The cost to register is $100 per person. Read the press release here.

Volleyball Canada is excited to announce the Youth & Senior Beach Nationals are returning to Toronto in 2022. The three-day tournament is Volleyball Canada’s largest beach competition with youth and senior teams from across the country converging on Ashbridges Bay to play for the title of National Champion.

Both the Youth and Senior events are open, with the Youth tournament featuring seven age divisions from 14U – 20U. The senior side will feature some of the best teams in Canada, including current National Team members.

As the culminating event of the beach season, the event focuses on providing a fun and competitive environment for all participants.

Awards are handed out to 1st, 2nd and 3rd place teams in all age categories with the senior event offering an additional prize purse of $15,000.

Youth Beach Nationals are expanding to include a 14U to 16U event in Vancouver, August 26-28 at Spanish Banks Beach. British Columbia last hosted Beach Nationals in 2015 in Parksville, after being held on the Spanish Banks in 2013.

As the culminating event of the beach season, the event focuses on providing a fun and competitive environment for all participants.

The 2022 National Youth Track and Field Championships will be hosted in Sherbrooke, Quebec from August 5th-7th. Registration is open until July 27th at 11:59pm.

Badminton Canada is excited for the return of the 2022 YONEX Canada Para-badminton International from June 8th-12th, 2022 at the University of Ottawa’s Montpetit Hall.

With an amazing location in the heart of Ottawa, the event will be an exceptional experience for athletes, spectators and volunteers as 2020 Paralympians are set to compete. This tournament is the highest caliber of international para-badminton competition, and is the last qualifying tournament for the 2022 World Para-badminton Championships in Japan come November.

The event will be free to spectators from Wednesday June 8th to Sunday June 12th.

The three-day round-robin tournament will feature host Canada, Cuba, Mexico and Puerto Rico vying to qualify for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. Canada must finish first to qualify. The winner of the tournament will join Brazil, Italy, Poland, Russia, Argentina, Japan and the USA at the 2020 Tokyo Games from July 25 to August 9.
