Canada and Brazil will face off in Gatineau ahead of VNL

Ahead of the highly anticipated Volleyball Nationals League (VNL) 2023, Canada will host volleyball
powerhouse Brazil at the Centre Sportif de Gatineau, which also serves as the men’s training
centre.

Under the guidance of Canada’s new head coach Tuomas Sammelvuo, the team will use these
“friendly” matches to prepare for Volleyball Nations League the following week in Ottawa.

Both matches in Gatineau, Quebec, will be up-close and action packed, with great opportunities for fans to interact with some of the world’s top volleyball players!

Ottawa is hosting week one of the men’s 2023 Volleyball Nations League tournament – June 6
to 11, 2023 at the Arena at TD Place. The teams include Canada, USA, Argentina, Italy, Cuba, Germany, Netherlands and Brazil. All tickets are on sale at www.tdplace.ca

Wheelchair Basketball Canada will host the Ottawa Invitational tournament presented by Meridian Credit Union at Carleton University from May 17-21, 2023. The five-day tournament will see Canada’s Senior Men’s National Team play host to the top wheelchair basketball athletes from the Netherlands and the United States in a series of exhibition games.

All nine games will take place at Carleton University Raven’s Nest (9376 University Drive, Ottawa, ON) and are free and open to the public. Those wishing to attend games can secure their free tickets here. The Ottawa Invitational will serve as a final preparation for all three nations for the IWBF World Championships (June 9-20) in Dubai.

16 High School Ultimate teams from across the country will rally in Ajax Ontario on May 6-7, 2023 to compete in the Canadian High School Ultimate Championships (CHSUC). The CHSUC will be held at the Ajax Community Centre and will be supported by dedicated volunteers of all ages. This year’s championships will welcome 16 teams from 4 different provinces; a great turn out for the first CHSUC since the Covid-19 pandemic. Ultimate Canada will be live streaming this event on the Ultimate Canada YouTube channel on May 6 and 7, be sure to tune in. The 2023 National Kickboxing Championship was named ‘The Battle of the Moose!’. The theme is based on the artwork that was commissioned by Patrick Hunter. Patrick is a two-spirted Ojibway artist who is world-renowned for his incredible First Nations artwork. He graciously provided WAKO Canada the artwork for our Championship awards and worked alongside our planning committee. The Battle of the Moose represents athletes that fight honorably in the spirit of fair play and the love of sport.

West Coast Wonder Women+ (WCWW+) is an all-female international boxing card held in Sooke, British Columbia, Canada. As one of the five all-female boxing cards in the world, WCWW+ provides an opportunity and platform for empowerment to women athletes of all ages.

WCWW+’s mission is to redefine the historical and social perceptions of boxing and create a pathway for women to succeed in a male-dominated sport. This year’s card takes place from May 19 to 23 and will include over 100 fighters from across the globe, including athletes making their debut to national champions defending their titles.

Lindsay’s first pickleball tournament set for Friday, March 24th at Lindsay Fair Grounds.  Players of all ages and skill levels welcome for a day of fun competition.  The entry fee is low and all proceeds are going to the Kulikayo charity supporting children and families in Uganda.

R.I.S.E. Academy Hockey Tournament and Summit

Last year R.I.S.E. held its first Hockey Tournament with the theme of inclusivity.  We had the opportunity to have 65 youth and their parents engage in great hockey and meaningful conversation about the need for change in the sport that we love.  This year we are growing the event into a three day tournament with the goal of attracting 24 teams, approximately 400 youth and their parents as well as hosting a 1 day summit focused on making hockey more inclusive for all.  During the one day summit many stakeholders will come together that include players, parents, coaches, hockey executives, and the community where they will engage in hockey, fun, dialogue and a Call to Action.

SUMMIT THEME:

Given hockey’s 2017 Declaration of Principles, the current and ongoing issues of maltreatment by players, coaches as well as spectators, and the long overdue need for positive culture change for the survival of the sport, the theme for the Hockey Summit is “Changing The Hockey Culture: The Challenge And The Opportunity”.

Pickleball Regina, with Pickleball Canada, is proud to host the 2023 Pickleball Canada National Championship. Over the course of five days, more than 1,000 players from across Canada are expected to compete for the coveted title of Canada’s best pickleball athletes in age categories ranging from 16 to 75. Competition categories include men’s and women’s singles, men’s and women’s doubles, and mixed doubles.

The 2023 Saskatchewan Winter Games presented by Teine Energy will celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Saskatchewan Games Program. The event will be held in Regina, SK for the first time in program history. 1800 participants will compete in 17 sports during the week long event.

The Closing Conversation with the Commissioner will be used as an opportunity to reflect on lessons learned through our dialogue with the Canadian sport community and through the webinars presented.
