Gymnastics Canada  – CALGARY, AB (March 19, 2017) – The final day of junior and senior men’s competition at the 2017 University of Calgary International Cup saw Team Canada win fifteen medals in the apparatus finals including three gold medals from senior gymnast René Cournoyer.

Cournoyer, from Repentigny, QC, dominated the competition in the men’s ring apparatus final, scoring 14.450 and capturing the gold medal. Cournoyer also won gold on the parallel bars, tying Shane Wiskus from Team USA with a score of 14.100 and tied Canadian teammate Anderson Loran from Saskatoon, SK on the high bar with a score of 13.750 to win his third gold medal.

Evan Cruz of Halifax, NS, placed third in the senior men’s floor final with a score of 13.650. Jeremy Bartholomeusz of Etobicoke, ON scored 14.900 points in the vault final to win the gold medal beating his next closest competitor by almost one point.

“I did really well today and felt great going into finals,” said Barthlomeusz following competition. “Today’s mentality was stay focused and everything will come together, and it did. The atmosphere in the venue is terrific, it’s probably one of the biggest crowds we’ve had.”

In junior men’s action, Team Canada won three gold, four silver and two bronze medals during the apparatus finals. David Sandro of Milton, ON won gold with his pommel horse routine scoring 13.150 points, more than one point ahead of silver medalist and Canadian teammate Evgeny Siminiuc of Mississauga, ON, who won silver with a score of 11.900. Siminiuc also took home a gold medal, scoring 13.500 points on the parallel bars to stand atop the podium.

William Emard of Laval, QC captured the third junior gold medal, winning first place on the rings with a score of 13.550 points. Emard also took home a silver medal on the floor, scoring 13.550 points. Darren Wong of Vancouver, BC finished just behind Emard on floor, rounding out the podium in third place with a score of 13.400 points. In the vault final, Wong scored 13.850 points and won the silver medal.

Junior all-around champion, Félix Dolci of Laval, QC, won a silver medal on the high bar with a score of 12.800 points and a bronze medal on the vault with a score of 13.750 to complete his collection. “I was really happy with my high bar routine,” Dolci said. “It was the first time I completed that routine in competition and I’m proud. I have had a sore shoulder, so I haven’t been able to practise as much as I would like, so to win a gold, silver and bronze this weekend is exciting.”
