Schwaiger and Sugrim win senior tumbling titles at 2019 Elite Canada competition

CALGARY, AB (May 5, 2019) – Dynamo Gymnastics teammates Jon Schwaiger of Caledonia, ON and Jordan Sugrim of Mississauga, ON took top honours in men’s and women’s senior tumbling respectively at the 2019 Elite Canada competition at the Genesis Centre in Calgary, AB on Sunday.
 
Schwaiger entered the finals as the top qualifier and didn’t disappoint, laying down two strong passes to take the gold medal with a score of 68.200. Michael Zeuner, also from Dynamo Gymnastics, took the silver medal with a score of 56.500. Schwaiger and Zeuner were the only two athletes to make the qualifying score in the preliminaries to advance to the finals.
 
“Today went really good – definitely a little bit better than prelims, which didn’t go how I wanted them to,” said Schwaiger who is the reigning senior Canadian champion in tumbling. “Today, I threw down two pretty solid passes which gives me a good benchmark for what to work on for nationals in July. My goal was to compete a new straight pass in prelims which I didn’t do, but it’s a pass that will help me make finals at worlds, which is always the goal for the year. It’s up there as being one of the hardest passes I can do, but I’ve had a little bit of inconsistency with it at competitions, so I’m just trying to figure that out, and to control the nerves.”
 
In women’s senior tumbling, there were also only two athletes in the final, but it was a tight battle between Sugrim and Zoe Hipel from Aurora, ON for the gold. Sugrim was ultimately victorious with a score of 129.900, while Hipel settled for silver with a score of 125.000.
 
“Today went really well. It was a good confidence booster for the year because I took most of last year off,” said Sugrim who placed fifth in tumbling at the 2017 World Games. “My goal here was to get my (qualifying) score for Worlds, so I didn’t have to be stressed at nationals getting it, and I did that, so today was actually really good!”
 
In synchro trampoline, it was the pair of Jérémy Chartier of Montreal, QC and Keegan Soehn of Red Deer, AB who topped the podium in the men’s senior category, taking the gold with a score of 139.440. Erik Arruda and Ethan Love from Skyriders Trampoline Place took the silver, while Charles Frigon and Justin Lefaivre from Dynamix took bronze. There were no competitors in senior women’s synchro.
 
Next up for the bulk of these athletes will be the Canadian Championships which are set to take place in Oshawa, ON from July 24-28 at Durham College.
