Quarterly Newsletter – October 2019

Triathlon Canada – As we approach the finish line of the competitive season, 2019 will be remembered as a breakthrough on the road to Tokyo 2020.

Joanna Brown’s bronze medal triumph at the Bermuda World Triathlon Series in April sparked a summer of success for the nation’s best triathletes at all levels. After capturing his first two World Cup victories, Tyler Mislawchuk and Para-triathlete, Stefan Daniel, both sprung onto the top step of the podium at the Olympic and Paralympic Test events in Tokyo, just weeks after Alexis Lepage sprinted to his first World Cup podium.

Success breeds success. The next generation followed their path to the podium. Brock Hoel, Martin Sobey, Aiden Longcroft-Harris, Charles Paquet and Amelie Kretz all celebrated medal-winning performances at CAMTRI events around the world this summer.

Our dynamic Para-triathletes capped off the season at the Grand Final when Stefan Daniel won his fourth career world title in the men’s standing division, while Jessica Tuomela and her guide Marianne Hogan climbed onto their first World Championship podium by taking the bronze in the women’s visually impaired sprint distance race.

A huge thanks goes out to the work invested by the athletes, coaches, support staff, along with our provincial, corporate and sport partners who have all contributed to this breakthrough season.

Eyes Focused on Edmonton 2020

The 2020 World Champions will be crowned in Edmonton’s Hawrelak Park.

The Edmonton stop on the international triathlon calendar is always an important one for all of us connected by a drive to defy our limits, and a shared passion for the simple acts of swimming, cycling and running.

Working with our partners at the World Triathlon Edmonton, we are thrilled to welcome the world’s best in our sport – from introducing our KITCan participants to triathlon, to our passionate age group athletes who are at the heart of the Triathlon Canada Nation, to our Olympic and Paralympic best battling it out for world titles.

It should not be overlooked the impact of having the world’s best triathletes in our backyard has on the development of our sport in Canada. Over the years, the Edmonton race has captured the imagination of many young Canadians to chase a dream of being Olympic and Paralympic triathletes…some of those kids will compete in Edmonton just weeks after realizing those dreams at the Tokyo Games.

We look forward to seeing you all in Edmonton, August 20-23, 2020.

National Coaching Certification Program: A New Model for Changing Times

Beyond developing skills and optimizing performance, coaches are responsible for creating a safe and positive environment that supports the social, emotional and cognitive development of each and every athlete, all under the watchful eye of parents, schools, communities and even social media. The challenges are complex, and coaches need our support.

A great coach is instrumental in creating a healthy, safe and supportive environment. Coaches help athletes to reach their full potential and we’re supporting coaches to do the same. That’s why we’re investing in the future of one of triathlon’s most valuable resources: our Community and Competitive coaches by launching a newly updated National Coaching Certification Program. The program has the following goals:

  • register and develop well-trained and certified coaches who teach athletes consistent fundamentals of the sport;
  • create a safe training and competitive environment for all involved in triathlon in Canada;
  • educate more triathlon coaches in Canada to develop athletes and help them reach their goals.

Please visit https://www.triathloncanada.com/coaching/ for complete details.

Everyone deserves a great coach!

Stefan Daniel

Stefan Daniel made history in 2016 becoming the first Canadian triathlete to ever win a medal at the Paralympic Summer Games when the sport made its Paralympic debut in Rio de Janeiro.

One of the most consistent para-triathletes in the world, Stefan had a dream season in 2015 to set up his Paralympic triumph, winning the gold medal at the Para-Triathlon World Championships in Chicago. He defeated his top rival – Germany’s Martin Schultz – for the first time in his career, and captured the nation’s attention by winning the able bodied Junior National Championships.

Head Coach – Tri Monsters

Be willing to go back to the basics every season.   The fall can be a great time to let go of training by distance and speed, and instead spend some time learning or refining the simple stuff.  Fine tuning your body position in the water, or taking a bike off road onto some grass or trails to work on cornering and weight transfer this fall, can pay great dividends as higher volume and intensity training phases are layered on, later in the season.

Improvements in skill and efficiency now can set you up for a safe, fast, and more confident season of training and racing ahead, so be open minded about playing with different patterns of movement this off season.

Laura is a performance pathway coach working primarily with youth and junior athletes in Vernon BC.  Having been involved in triathlon as an athlete, coach, and race director, Laura is a Certified Comp-Dev Triathlon coach, as well as a Trained Senior Level Swim Coach, and is recognized as an accredited partner of Triathlon BC in the enhanced excellence program.
