Calgary, AB – The Calgary Minor Basketball Association (CMBA) is proud to announce the launch of its new Athlete Development Guides, designed to support coaches, parents, and athletes in fostering excellence on and off the court. Leveraging best practices from Sport4Life and Canada Basketball, these guides represent a significant step forward in providing the thousands of volunteers within CMBA with the tools and knowledge needed to empower athlete-members to reach their full potential.
Empowering Volunteers, Elevating Athletes
CMBA’s Athlete Development Guides aim to address the holistic needs of young athletes by offering clear, evidence-based guidelines rooted in the principles of long-term athlete development (LTAD). These resources are tailored to help all members of the basketball community deliver/receive effective, age-appropriate training that promotes skill development, mental resilience, and positive character building.
Incorporating National Standards
The guides incorporate proven methodologies from Sport4Life’s LTAD framework and Canada Basketball’s recommendations for athlete-centered coaching. By aligning with these nationally recognized programs, CMBA ensures that its approach reflects the highest standards in youth sports development.
“Our goal is to create a culture where athletes can thrive both in the game and in life,” said Ken King, Executive Director of CMBA. “These guides are roadmaps for fostering well-rounded individuals who excel on the court and contribute positively to their communities. When you’re asking volunteers to lead, it’s important to provide them with as many accessible resources as possible so all involved have the best chance to succeed”.
Comprehensive Support for All Stakeholders
Designed with inclusivity and practicality in mind, the Athlete Development Guides provide tailored content for:
- Coaches: Best practices for skills training, game strategies, and fostering teamwork and sportsmanship.
- Parents: Insights on supporting their child’s development, understanding the demands of the sport, and fostering a positive environment.
- Athletes: Tools for building technical skills, mental toughness, and life skills such as goal-setting and time management.
Impacting Thousands of Young Athletes
With thousands of athlete-members participating in CMBA programs, these guides will play a critical role in shaping the future of basketball in Calgary. By equipping volunteers with these comprehensive resources, CMBA is ensuring that every athlete receives the support they need to grow, succeed, and enjoy the game.
